That tool shown above is what I used to remove my windscreen. I cracked it twice in the process. The windscreen was held in my a crap load of silicon. The wire method is what is recommended and I feel it would have worked much better.
Anyway...O'Briens came to my house and installed the new one for $275 plus $20 for a new moulding.... NA8

I've done about a dozen windscreen removals with the old man, usually so he can weld the front legs in on a roll cage.

The most effective way we found is get yourself a helper and some vice grips or multi-grip pliers and some strong wire (I had some old guitar strings that we used a couple of times and they worked well) and basically one person inside the car and one out and just saw back and forth with the wire, the friction will heat the wire a little and then it glides its way through the goop pretty nicely. It is really tricky to do the bottom section without scratching the dash though.

Last time the windscreen guy came to put one back in he gave me some of the wire they use in the same way and it turned it into a 10 min job.

Also I would shop around with other windscreen repair companies... O'briens are always known to be pretty dear and you really just pay for their TV commercials and not any extra quality, A windscreen removal and replacement takes easily less than an hour and if they aren't supplying the glass thats an expensive windscreen seal!

Pretty sure I paid $250-275 for a Mornington company to remove a cracked screen and install a new one. Maybe someone around your way to do the same, which saves you money and avoids the danger of the old screen not surviving being removed?
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)
