Motorcraft XT-M5-QS full synthetic manual trans fluid

Planning on changing my gearbox oil (NA6 5 speed) as I have no idea when it may have been done last (previous owner wasn't an enthusiast).

I've done a bit of research on a few forums and our british and american friends all seem to swear by Motorcraft XT-M5-QS full synthetic manual trans fluid, however it doesn't seem to be readily available here in Oz. I did find a thread that organised a GB but all has been quiet about this stuff since then. http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=53260&start=30

Would like to hear feedback from members who got this oil from the GB and what opinions were. Would also like to know if anyone has been able to source this stuff locally or where you can get it imported from. Perhaps another group buy could be in order if it's really such good stuff.

If efforts trying to source this fail I'll go with the next best thing recommended - Redline MT-90.

Nulon 75/90 performance head always worked the best for me in both 5 and 6 speed gearboxes on turbo and N/A MX5 on road and in motorsport conditions.

Available from any car parts shop for not very much money.

I have tried a number of 'high performance' oils and race oils and nothing else had worked as well as the nulon.

Amsoil MTG is also a very decent synthetic oil available locally from Harold @ Performance Lube (http://www.performancelub.com/).

The Nulon Smooth Shift Synthetic use to be made to the same spec as the Motorcraft (WSD-M2C200-C), but from what I have seen lately, they have changed the spec....otherwise I would assume it would of been another good local alternative to the Motorcraft.

Maybe some auto spare shops will have some old stock with the WSD-M2C200-C spec as it was only changed a few months back.

If your oil hasn't been changed for a while, I would personally fill with Castrol VMX80 and drive around for a few 1000kms to flush/clean the box out before filling with a premium performance synthetic.

many threads on all this. I guess if you really want brand X then go for it. However choosing one brand over another is probably far more about preference than any science. I also do not think anyone knows the "formula" for any of these products and if they did a change the consumer would not know. If an owner uses a standard oil and has no problems with gearchanges does that mean anything?

Very good points! I may as well do the diff oil while I'm at it. I've tried everywhere to get the Motocraft here without much luck. I would be willing to join a group buy if others are interested again.

I've tried the Redline and Nulon products, but nothing has improved the gear change as much as this Motocraft stuff has... I would buy it again as it was that good. It has a honey like quality to it... kinda sticky and reminds me of high quality bicycle gear oil I once bought... has that adherence to fingers and things... pretty good.

Hmmmm...One would think with the amount of good reviews this stuff has had for many years our local Ford dealers would have caught on by now to make a few bucks...

Yeah, but Mazda doesn't even hold most parts for the old MX5, so not surprised if the local dealers don't care. If they ain't selling new cars, they aren't interested.
