Haven't made a decision yet but have talked to a couple of local tyre places.

I can get the Kumho KU31 for $100
They said they are a directional tyre and could become noisy over time - but good value for money.

Forgot to ask about the Achilles ATR Sport - will do that.

Bridgestone RE002 I can get for $145 each.
Told me they are less comfortable as a day to day tyre but if I only want to drive it hard that I'd prefer them.

Their recommendation was the Dunlop Fast Response at $125 each?
Said they were a nice driving tyre that would wear well.
I can't seem to find anything on the forum about them.

Also spoke to a Hankook dealer who suggested;
H437 at $115 each
or
S1 eva K107 at $150 each
Again I can't seem to find anything on the forum about them.

So at moment I am still leaning towards the KU31 as my value tyre that has good feedback from those who've used them.

Typical sales pitch. KU31 and RE002 are now very well known so no need to "sell" them and they are trying of sell tyres which aren't moving. Achilles ATR at $89 is hard to beat. Had a quick conversation about them to a tyre fitter and although he's not personally experienced them, he said the shop has sold a shipload of them without any complaints from customers.
They might be even cheaper now there's a new ATR version.

I have the Khumo Ku31's on 16" rims on my NA and very happy with them.

Previous road tyres on the NA were RE002's on a 15" rim, but about half worn we I got the car. They are now only good for a couple of dry track days after I put some goop on them to make them nice and R spec sticky.

I also have Achilles on 17" rims on my S14 and they have been a good tyre for what I need.

I have no real preference of one over the other, as one of the important criteria was price, but wasn't going to sacrifice too much quality in the tyre, ie no way I would be running wanli's triangles, ling longs or any other shitty chinese tyre on the car.

Hankooks I used on one of my utes at the recommendation of my tyre supplier, if they were good enough for the shop owner they were good enough for me, especially at the price at the time compared to OEM tyres.

Of the tyres you have mentioned any of them would suit what you want and the Khumos at $100 a corner seems to be a good price.

Mate, I've tried all the tyres you've mentioned above except for the ATR and for a safe, road tyre, the RE002s is superior to the others that I've tried. Great dry grip, equally good wet grip (this is the biggest diff), quiet and very progressive (you'll hear the tyres making noises before it lets go).

Bridgestone is running a 4 for 3 special atm (http://www.bridgestone.com.au/4for3/default.aspx) so at $109 a corner, they win hands down.

I'm contemplating at getting another set right now cause my current set is pass its half life after 20000kms.

i've gone through a full set of KU31s and fitted a set of RE002s over the weekend, both sets 205/45R16.

i had no qualms with the KU31. i found them predictable and quite reasonable in both wet and dry. the only time they acquaplaned was down the straight at wakefield.

the RE002 is very much a superior tyre in every way, although i haven't yet dríven on them in the rain. first thing i noticed was how much quieter they were. they have considerably more grip - i was not expecting such a big difference. comfort is equal or better as well.

at first i found they were really uncomfortable and initial turn in was worse than the KU31, but once i reduced the tyre pressures from 40 psi they were brilliant.

Sounds like a good time to return to Bridgestone (RE002)! Grip of my Michelin PP2s has been deteriorating since late last year - tread depth is 4mm, but they turned 5 mid last year.

Thanks for the tip+ on the 4 for 3 Bridgestone deal.
Noticed I have a local Bridgestone dealer so I went there and asked about the RE002's.
He quoted $135 each (better than my independent place at $145) but had no stock.
Rang head office and have to wait for next shipment at end of month - deal ends at end of month.
He rang around and found some other stock but he said that dealer had paid and wanted full price for them - $149 each and no 4 for 3 deal (I think - need to confirm).

He offered MY02's at $99 each - can't be sure now if he said the 4 for 3 deal does or does not apply to those? (again need to confirm)

Assuming it doesn't, seems like I am best going with the KU31's at $100 each.

Got a price from my independent dealer for Achilles ATR Sport at $115 each - a bit more than $89 each - suppose I need to shop around more.

Just to finish off on the Bridgestone deal for RE002's.
Apparently no discount stock exists at the moment - discounted price is $135 each.
Stock not unloaded till end of month - 4 for 3 deal ends end of month.
My local supplier said if I pay now they will honour the 4 for 3 deal at the $135 discounted price when the tyres come at the end of the month.
If anything unforeseen happens they will credit my money back at the least.

I contacted the other store myself who had a set on the shelf.
He said he would do the 4 for 3 deal - but he wanted full price for the tyres at $149 each.
I said fair enough and took it and had them fitted today.
I also paid for a 4 wheel alignment at $79 which I could have got done for $65 elsewhere.
Looking forward to trying them out.
Already it is now safe to accelerate around corners in the wet.
Time to get back to work so I can pay the credit card bill

Forgive my ignorance, but what is this goop you talk of? It sounds like something I could use on the crappy Advan Heros that I have on mine since I bought the car. I just cant bring myself to throw away tires with heaps of tread.

Tyre treatment. I've got a bottle of rpm branded tyre grip, there is also another brand. They soften the rubber but best used on tyres as the treatment does affect the tyres. Both types you paint on the tread face and leave for a couple of days before use, one type you wrap in glad wrap for a better result.

Using it is illegal in a lot of racing classes, and it is pretty easy to detect as the treatment has a reasonable odour.

.. been experiencing quite a bit of wheel spin from start-go from traffic lights on wet roads (during/after rain). I'm lifting off more or less the same as I'd do in the dry (not dumping the clutch by any means), but unless I balance the clutch/accelerator pedal well I'm gonna get some wheel spin which is quite annoying. Not sure is it due to the diff tyre brands I have at the rear which are pretty old 2009/2005 (Toyo Proxes and Falken Ziex 512).

So I guess my next upgrade would be some new rubber for safety. Not looking to change rims or what not, so just the standard 205/45/R16.
I've used Yoko S Drive and A Drive R1 in my previous car and kinda like them, was thinking if there are any other of similar range to the S/A Drive (Bridgestone Potenza or Federal 595)? If you guys have any recommendations on tyre shop with good price/service, do holler out. I'm in Melbourne btw.
