My sons MX5 had a similar issue and it was timing related. Have a look at the crank pulley and see if there is a pronounced wobble.

Thanks Magpie,

The engine is a longnose, I still checked though and there is no wobble.

Yesterday I ordered new bosch leads from supercheap and they arrived today. While I was installing them I took out all of the spark plugs and took photos of each one.

I'm going to take a stab and say that the 3rd cylinder was misfiring? looks like the plug is a tad charred
.
After installing the new leads I took the car for a 15 minute drive and.... no misfiring :P I'm not sure if it was because I've been driving a festiva for the past week but it feels more responsive and less rough in the higher rpm range. It feels like I'm driving it for the first time again! I've heard that others have had the same result only to find that the next day the problem is back. I guess if this happens ill know the coil pack is the issue! more specifically, the coil pack which connects to lead 3.


I now need to get new brakes BUT I'm not sure which pads I need. I have been told I have nb8a/na8 brakes. fairly sure they are the same? I think the front rotor is a bit bigger than the back at ~260mm compared to the rear ~250mm. Not sure if the calliper has been swapped over to nb/na8. Can anyone answer how to tell between the na6 and na8 callipers? looking through the receipts says it's had na6 pads put on it... I guess thats the road ill be heading down then!

If anyone has any input then go go go.

The calipers aren't that different, but you can tell by looking at the disc OD. The bendix site has rough dimensions of each pad - there are difference between NA6 and NA8.

I am the former owner of this beast. (I purchased it from long-time forum member Grant).

Great to see it went to a good home and there are some plans in the works for it. I got that impression from the get-go and was happy to part with it for what I did.

I owned it for a mere 5 months and never had the chance to give it the attention it deserved, or carry out the plans I had for it. My Toyota 86 GTS arrived some 7 months earlier than expected so it was a bit of an impulsive sell!

Great to see the hardtop is not giving you grief anymore.

If it helps, I was told when I purchased it in October 2012 that it has NB calipers and rotors. Automotive Plus did all of the work on it when Grant owned it, so they should have a full history and know what the deal is. I visited them once to buy a few bits and pieces - flasher unit, dipstick, pedal rubbers, shifter boot - all typical NA6 problems, and they recognised it straight away :D

Makes me want one again. Deciding whether to get another '5 or buy an AVO turbo kit for the 86

JDM_NA, good to hear from you again. I have most definitely watched both parts of that and I'm eagerly awaiting the third part... It'll be really interesting to see how the custom setup works!


It's been a little while since I posted last but I have a few updates to share.

Since I installed those leads I have had zero misfiring issues so I'm pretty stoked that it was such an easy solution.

On the 18th of May I went to the Automotive Plus detailing day setup by Crapweasel. It was good to go and meet some others to share tips, share stories and drewl over the nice shiny cars everybody had. Initially I had planned to just pick up some springs from another forumite and then get some info on fixing up the 5's paint. I started chatting to Crap and it just so happened that nobody's car was being detailed at the time. This made mine a prime candidate!

Two runs were done on the car with the orbital buffer. The first was with a cutting compound and the second was with a polish. This took about 1.5 hours to do (A tough 1.5 hours of me watching Crapweasel do all of the work...). After each stage it was amazing how much better the paint looked. I'm sure everyone there on the day will vouch for how well it turned out in the end considering the condition of the paint beforehand. Here are some piccys to show it.

A HUGE thanks to Pete for organising the day and doing such a fantastic job on my car! Also, a big thanks to everyone who helped and shared their own tips and tricks. It was great to meet you all. If anyone reading this thread is interested in more photo's then check out the detailing day thread in the "events" section :) A lot of nice mx5's there.


So on the same day I picked up a set of Jamex springs for the car. I recently fitted them with a friend. The first front spring took a loooooooong time.... After a cry for help we were told to just remove the long bolt of the lower control arm and everything should be pretty obvious from there on and I'm happy to day that that's some good advice! Once the long bolt was out the lower arm drops fairly easily. After about 7 or so hours of messing around (spread over two days...) we had changed the springs over and took it for a spin. The car feels alot better through the turns and is now much more inclined to oversteer out of corners than it used to be. I also now have a nice bit of camber going on at the rears hehe. Now The limiting factor going around a corner is these tyres... I think I know where my money will be spent next :P

Looking fantastic.

How did the mirrors come out? I went over the car twice with the orbital polisher, albeit only using pure polish (no cutting compound).

I didn't have much hope for the mirrors from the start. Although the paint looked a bit brighter afterwards they still look pretty faded. Down the track I'm just going to get some second hand ones or some aftermarket ones :)

15x8 buddy clubs, with 205/50 hankooks. I'm loving the look of them and they are so much better than the old rock tyres I had before. Now to get some fresh brake pads!
