Aero Bonnet?

Hey guys, not too sure on this one but I am after some change in my bonnet to perhaps a cf / aero.

It seemed rather vague on the availability and different types when I google searched.

Flying Miata doesn't seem to sell any bonnets to start with either.

Anyone know a bit on where and some of the types of cf or aero bonnets?/

err okay... I have never built one of course but I do have some plans of how I want it to look.

If I do need to customize my own one, is there a special place I go to other than the mechanics to discuss the dynamics, effects of the shape/pattern and the cost to shape and purchase the raw material?

Garage Vary Hoods are probably the best aftermarket aero hood around (expen$ive though).

The fit of the Chaser hoods is generally regarded as poor.

I have a Stage21 NB hood that I'm yet to fit (need about 3 days to mod it - the hinge mount points aren't right for my NB8C, NB8A seems OK though, and I want to add hood ties and expand vents).

When you say things like 'dynamics' and 'aero' do you actually know what you are talking about and have a practical application in mind or are you chasing down some the pretty up your street car?
As for carbon fibre, there is little to no benefit fitting a carbon bonnet to an mx5 as the stock one is already light alloy to begin with. The bootlid however is steel and can be replaced with a lighter alternative but even then, you are just chasing your tail if you haven't ripped everything else out of the car and lightened up as much as possible first.
Have a look at autokonexion online and check their bonnets. You might find something you like. For the street I wouldn't bother with aero, you aren't driving at a consistent speed since there are limits, traffic, road hazards and so on. Any aero benefits would be lost as a result unless you want something to vent excess hot air out of your bonnet etc. Say, if you were running a high psi turbo or s/c setup which may generate a lot of unnecessary heat.

Im not aware of a single bonnet available on th eplanet that isnt heavier than the factory bonnet with some bracing cut off it.

As for aero, none will provide any benefit save from slight lift reduction on the front end at very high speed (track speeds not road speeds.)

I have a Garage Vary bonnet Winding Dancer Type 1 (FRP) and the fit is a very good fit. If going FRP factor in painting as this will add to the cost. When sitting in the drivers seat the GV Bonnet turns up a bit more at the windscreen than the standard bonnet so this helps a bit more with air flow. The only issue is the bolts for attaching to the hinges. They are very small and you can not reuse the nuts, you need large washers. I will take some photos and post them for you.

The only other issue with the GV is that consider getting the rain guard (my will be here soon), it will stop the water dripping onto the belts. One bonus though is that there is a bit of extra flow through the radiator so there is a small temp decrease. If you want some real data I can get some before and after engine bay temps.

Nitro Dann is wrong, but not far off. The cheapest option would be a stock bonnet with most of the frame removed, then cut vents in with a grinder. There ARE bonnets that weigh less than half of the factory bonnet. I have made a few at around 3.0 kg. and as far as aero goes. There are pics of every model on flyin miata site. They show what pressures are where on the bonnet. So you can determine where you want the vents from that info. Generally just behind the lights is a good place. Look at Brendan's bonnet when he posts pics of it. Or look on youtube under fastback mx5 aero testing.

the vents are in the wrong position though, i think.

i use to have a GV bonnet for my nb and it was about the same weight as the stock one. its almost oem quality too which is nice.

there is also this one but its not as light and you would have to put your own vents in it.

Have a look in Charlie 91's build as he modified the stock NA bonnet not only for vents but for weight as well.
