why are people afraid of guard rolling?

I see so many forum posters freak out about the notion of rolling their fenders. It is such a simple job and once done, you really cannot spot the difference from the outside. Maybe I could understand if these cars were rare and valuable but they are cheap mass produces cars. Very easy to attain and possibly the most produced car in recent history.
Can anyone give me a solid reason as to why it is such a big deal? Its reversible too. A mate of mine just unrolled his aw11 fenders as part of his oem resto. So it isnt exactly permanent.

For some of us who have come back from car makes where it was just not necessary,(Porschex3) there is uncertainty, but NOT fear.
I believe I will need this done to the mx5 NA that I picked up last year in order to fit new wheel/tyres and vigorously drive as fast as I can for as long as I can. Any assistance here in Brisbane to have this efficiently accomplished in the near future would be appreciated.

People can mod their cars but some buyers will avoid modded cars partly because the taste or lack of it is not theirs and there is a suspicion that as ausbuoy said it is "drive as fast as I can for as long as I can". There are no fenders on my car.

I think alot of people are a bit hesitant to roll their fenders for two reasons:

1. If you dont not apply enough physical heat into the panel their is a great chance of cracking the paint therefore requiring new paint which can range from a fender panel only respray to a more serious complete body respray, the latter can easily cause bill ehock with shops charging anywhere from $1000 to $20000 obviously depending on pearl or candy & bodykits or lips.

2. What many people seem to forget is although the front fender is removable, the rear fender is in fact NOT removeable and almost always requires new sheet metal to be custom made and welded to the body. This will draw similar costs to the first point I made (see Paint Cracking above).

I had no idea that the guards on my NB had been done until I was told. The previous owner had black XXR's 16x8 0 offset fitted with much lowered BC's ... The tyres on the XXR's still showed signs of rubbing

for me it's about the possibility of paint cracking.

If I had rubbish paint I'd have no qualms rolling them, but since my paint is relatively good I don't want to risk the $0 guard roll for needing a few hundred dollars of respraying.

I think you have bigger problems than your paint cracking, you might want to check your rear quarter out

For me it's the horror stories you hear about paint cracking, there's very little finesse in the way I do things so I don't really trust myself.
I'll probably get the courage to do it eventually but it's not on top of the list at the moment.

Dont do it yourself, pay a professional.

I dont often say that, and try to give everything a go myself, but when it comes to body work, experience and skill is required.
In sydney there are people that come to you, use all the heat necessary, and there is no chance of paint cracking off.

What on earth are you talking about. You do know what guard rolling is right? we are not talking about bolt on flares.

I rolled my guards because it was necessary in order to stop the rubbing I had with my new wheels and tyres. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered, of course.

I suppose certain people will do what it takes to achieve what they want. Personally I hired the correct tools and did it myself. Partly because I don't trust many people with my car and because I wanted to learn.

I don't think there's fear, just the risk that there 'may' be the potential for a costly fix for a stupid mistake.

like with almost everything automotive, take your time.
