MRA APRIL 14th
Drove down Saturday afternoon to get scrut'ed. No trailer, big mistake. Won't be doing that again, fairly warm day, I must have drunk 3 litres to rehydrate .
HATED repeat HATED the new tyres. Don't know if it is the different tyres, or going back to tyres at full tread. They were HORRIBLE. Got bad advice from the very unhelpful distributors of Kumho. Pressures as a result were way too high. This is one time I should have gone with my experience and ignored the advice. Next time out I will start at 25 cold (if it's a short session). Slid and skidded my way through qualifying and was lucky to run under 1.13 seconds. Best I managed all day was 1.12.6. Basically dropped pressures all day after each session. And the best lap was my last lap for the day, with pressures at their lowest.
But - had an absolute ball regardless. Great bunch of guys, I think 14 mx5s in total. I qualified 10th and the best I finished was 7th I think...? There were a few of us with basic engine mods scrapping it out at the back of the field having a ball.
There were a few casualties, for various reasons. Pretty clean racing for the most part (though there may be one person who would dispute that.... ). The tt race saw some great tussles, a few mx5s in there too duking it out with a variety of cars.
All in all it was an absolute hoot. Really great bunch all round. I got totally schooled by Señor Quick on racecraft. There is a lot more to this than posting quick lap times. All good fun, look out next time....

Yeah I found the kumho's are pretty slow at full tread depth as well, at least a second slower new but wait until they wear low... incredibly fast tyre bald in the dry. Just talk to Guran about how slow the hard R888's are compared to the softer tyres like A050/V70A. 26 cold and then 34 hot is what I used with bleeding for 1-3 sessions depending on the weather to stabilise. I don't have any temp sheets in front of me now but it was something like Inside/Centre/Outside 72/64/64 which followed all the reading I did as optimal. From memory it's the static camber causing more deformation on the inside of the tyre outside corning which holds the inside edge a little higher, I tried pulling the camber out to perfectly even the surface temps and only went slower so I've stuck with the current alignment for a LONG time.... I only have an infrared temp gun though... if you've got a real Pyro you can actually check the carcass temp which won't drop crazy fast like the tyre surface temp so as long as you keep a logbook you'll be set. I use an orange TPMS in my car and you can see a 2-3 psi drop in a partial cooldown lap (which should correspond with a 20-30C temp drop on the tyre). So out on the track I'd ballpark the real tyre surface temp way up in the 90-100 range.

Cool thanks Mark. I was planning on running slightly lower starting pressures, 24 and aiming for 32-34. Yeah Toyos give better life which suited me but hopefully no more driving to the track now!
That Orange gear looks like some pretty good kit. Gotta love their description too, methinks the translation went a little haywire

Postscript re the Kumho's. Spoke to John at F Sport yesterday who was extremely friendly and helpful - unlike the other character I had dealt with.
John recommended pressures close to 10 psi lower than the other character and could have saved me a lot of mucking around and frustration. Again....this is one time I should have backed my instincts.

Have got my second set of wheels Enkei pf01's (now to get some rubber for them )
And have been playing with a wireless obd reader - plx kiwi - and dashcommand, trying to get onboard displays of engine parameters and maybe a shiftlight too if I can find the right software. You can do it with dashcommand, but I don't have a propeller rotating above my cranium to facilitate the programming (also can't be bothered putting in the time when I know someone out there must have been there before me....)
Will report back when both the above are sorted!

I think either one will be a hoot! I will do the FOSC two day'er in August - can't wait to have an event in Sydney and not have to do the 2-3 hour drive south.
