timk makes up for talent with an EFR

The Lakeside track day was awesome, here is my PB of 65.5 seconds:

There was a fair bit of traffic but overall it was a great day.

Good news is the oil cooler seems to be working really well; I didn't see oil temps above 102 degrees C.

Bad news is I am having issues with the studs between the turbo and manifold backing out!

I have also changed over from an iPhone 4 to a Nexus 4, so I gave RaceChrono a go and was very impressed! I used a RAM mount from CamZilla to hold the new phone in place. No issues here.

One of the studs between the manifold and turbo completely disappeared in a later session that day. Since the track day, the car sounds like it has a screamer pipe when I get into boost. Hopefully things are still flat and the gasket is salvageable.

To try and figure out what is required to keep an SE happy on track days, I am going to be a bit of a guinea pig and try things in stages. The first stage will be to add a flex pipe on the dump pipe and see if it makes any difference.

I haven't taken a good look at the SE dump but why not brace the dump pipe to the engine/bell housing to take some weight off the manifold/studs then add the flex pipe in before the cat.

That's not a bad idea Dave. The factory dump pipe has a brace, but I have an SMB dump pipe. The missing stud is between the turbo and manifold which is already braced, however the turbo to dump pipe studs may be loose or missing as well (it's quite hard to see them).

Not sure Dave, but I'll know soon enough!

Not many updates, I have received the plugs and pins to make the Toyota COP loom so I'll write about that when I get to it. I've also been trying to accurately measure the sensors for my Adaptronic install.

I gave the car a wash and took a few pics of how it looks now with the later model lights and bar, plus the 6UL wheels:

I'm trying to keep a "nothing to see here" appearance.

A few updates...

I went to an MX-5 detailing day and I have to say the car came up way better than expected:

Went to Queensland Raceway on Monday for a club track day. I only managed two laps for the day due to mechanical issues, however one of them was a 65, can't really complain!

The issue was the alternator tensioning bolt, but without it I had no alternator or water pump. Jason and Jeff from MX-5 Plus stole bits from their race car at the end of the day to get me home, absolute champions!

AAAARGH - you bought the wrong colour rims, they should have been bronze 6ULs!!!

Green MX5 + Gold/Bronze rims = "Sex on wheels"

Green MX5 + Silver rims, not so much.

It's surprising how much better the car looks with NB8C headlights though - definitely worth whatever you paid for them.

Added a flex joint to hopefully help with the loose stud issue:

The midpipe is mild steel, so it probably doesn't help having the air conditioning drain dump straight onto it (see rubber hose at top of pic):

Can you guys think of anything to slow the rust? Some kind of special coating?

Thin coat of exhaust paint, thinner is less likely to crank sure to thermal expansion.

Why not attack the problem rather then the symptom though? Can you lengthen the ac hose to route it off the pipe?
