na clubman rear suspension knock

Postby na8max » Sat Apr 20, 2013 4:12 pm

Hey guys I was hoping someone could help me out. I've got a 1994 clubman and after I put my suspension in I've got a knock from the left hand rear. I installed brand new stance coilovers and I have them as low as the will go, but its only on one side that its knocking. I though it might be the pillow top on the strut but ive stripped and inspected it and I couldn't find any thing wrong. I've also disconnected the sway bar as I thought it may be knocking on something but the noise is still there.

Ive checked the obvious, and all bolts are tight, but I cant seem to find the knock. The bushes seem fine with no excessive play. So basically after a thorough Google search I'm stumped! Any help or ideas you guys may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Max

Have you ruled out the exhaust knocking against something?

For some reason the floor of the boot in an NA8 is a giant speaker/amplifier for all body noises in the car, especially if the carpet's out. Just about any solid knock on the body anywhere, or even the roof, can sound like it comes from the left rear suspension.

You've checked the obvious things. As Paul said an exhaust knock is worth checking. Also spare wheel, jack and battery. Then I'd go back over the suspension bushes and move each of them around with a pinch bar to check again that none of them are shot. A control arm sleeve touching the chassis makes a good solid knocking sound. You could also try swapping the left and right rear coilovers. If the noise moves then it might pinpoint a faulty top hat or coilover.

A knock could also be a bush that rotates under high suspension angle - bolt not tight enough meaning that if deflected enough it slips and the sleeve rotates.

Having the same problem in my na8 and its driving me nuts! Almost feels like the top hats bolts are loose and there touching the chassis mounts. Only get the noise when going over bumps, not in cornering or anything.

Let us no if you find the problem :)

I know with mine that it is the pillowball upper mounts on my Teins that is giving me a knocking sound? Not sure if you might have a similar issue?
