NB 6 speed speedo sensor question.
Hi all
I have a 6 speed gearbox i believe came out of a jdm nb8b that i am about to install into my na6, along with the rest of the driveline and electrics.
The gearbox i have is missing the speedo sensor, Does anyone know if there are different speedo sensors for the 6 speed depending on what the final drive ratio is? Or are all 6spd speedo sensors the same part and calibration is in the instrument cluster?
I will have nb8b cluster to use, i know with some cars the calibration is in the cluster and can be changed. Just having trouble finding information if there is mutliple speedo sensors available for the 6 speed.
Hope that makes sense.
Cheers
Nick

Re: NB 6 speed speedo sensor question.
Pretty sure all 6 speeds came with a 3.63 drive ratio diff (correct me if I'm wrong) so technically, the electronic sensor will be for a 3.63 FGR, and that's what you want.

Use the na6 sensor that suits your diff ratio.

Unfortunently i doubt the cable dríven na6 sensor will plug into the back of an nb8b digital cluster.

Ah this helps, so should just be a case of getting any 6 speed sensor and then calibrating my speedo. Thanks !

Re: NB 6 speed speedo sensor question.
You will need to fit the correct speedo gear for your diff ratio, they are different colours, the electronic sender units are all the same you just fit the different gear, I have a few in the shed, definately have 4.1 ratio not sure about others.
Most of the JDM 6 speed MX5 run 3.9 ratio

NC Roadie, NC Racey, ND Racey….and a 30AE
Plus several others in the bone yard...

Excellent info, do you know what colour the gears are for 4.3? That's what diff ratio i will be using.
Out of curiosity what would you want for one?

Re: NB 6 speed speedo sensor question.
There were two speedo drive gears available from Mazda (for the NA at least) - the purple 22 teeth & the red 23 teeth. Apparently the purple 22 teeth one is not the one that was present on the Australian delivered MX5.

I've got a red 22 tooth out of an NB8A that I've just swapped out. NB8As were all 4.1 FGR , weren't they?

In Aust the 10AE was 3.6, but not sure about the Heritage. JDM not sure.

Re: NB 6 speed speedo sensor question.
Sorry, I should have said all AU 5 speed NB8As were 4.1 and this is an electronic sensor from an AU 5 speed. 10AE and Heritage were 6 speeders, weren't they?

Re: NB 6 speed speedo sensor question.
Don't know what colour the 4.3 gear is, $20 for the sender with no gear.... A gear from NA6 should be the right one for you.
10AE had 3.9 diff.
Yes 10AE and heratige are 6 speed.

Lou, it did outside of Australia, but here we got the 3.6 - Aussie 10AE spec sheet at top of page:

Re: NB 6 speed speedo sensor question.
4.3:1 speedo gear to suit NB8A box is green with 23 teeth. I presume the same will fit 6 speed box.
It was difficult to find a 4.3:1 sender unit in Aus, so I had Flycasta chase up a second hand unit for me in Japan. It cost around $120 from memory.
