Anyone had a play with hsd-ad coils?

Postby bowzaa » Sun Apr 14, 2013 11:05 pm

Hi guys,

Figured this might have been covered but a search here and a bit of google yielded very little.

Anyone had a play with the HSD ADseries yet?
I've had the better models in a s13 before, just wondering if anyone had knowledge of the limited damper rates. Springs rates are irrelevant as I have spare springs here (7/5kg standard).
Know there are enough on here that would want sub 1k coils.

Cheers

I have a set of HSD HR coilovers which are quite decent for steet driving. I have no illusions of doing autoX or anything serious. They can't compare to Ohlins, but are much better than the tired stock suspension. I went for the HRs due to their elongated rear travel. That said, if I could go back, I might have gone for the FM Stage 2.5 kit, or kept saving money till I could afford the Ohlins. Not saying that they're bad, but just a matter of 'what if'. Also, have a read here: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=37306

I'd be wary of trying to "cheap-out" on coilovers, they're still reasonably expensive to purchase and fit (expensive time-wise if you do it yourself).

I have BC Racing BR Series coilovers which I'm happy with for the price. If I had to do it again, I'd probably go with the HSD HR coilovers due to their extra rear travel and because Fast Fours and Rotaries recommend them as their favourite budget coilover.

Note:

For track handling, Keith Tanner from Flyin' Miata recommends a spring ratio rate of 3:2 so 9kg front and 6kg rear is ideal. Your 7kg Front and 5kg rear is closer to this ratio than my BC coilovers though (8kg Front, 6kg rear).

For street driving only, the ratio should be closer, such as Tein Super Streets which are 7kg front, 6kg rear.

Sorry guys but you've both missed the point of this topic, as I stated I've owned hsd-hr coils before and the spring rates are irrelevant as I have plenty here to work with.

No-one with actual experience?

Although I have never used them, they seem to be popular on the UK MX5 forums (MX5nutz).

The main difference from what I saw when looking into them a few months back was the HR series use monotube dampers where as the AD series are twin tube. The AD series are equivalent to the now discontinued HSD DT series.

Supposedly monotube coilovers perform more consistently in high heat/performance applications. So if you plan to track your car on the odd occasion, the HR might be with the extra.

Wow, that's great to hear! Do you happen to have the article?

Cheers Mr rev head, that's exactly what I was after! Strange I couldn't find that in my google travels.
Just ordered a set of hr, will see how they go!
