What/where to find double-sided tape to attach boot spoiler?

Postby shuey » Sat Apr 13, 2013 6:52 pm

Okay, so I'm trying to attach my SE boot spoiler to my boot lid (without having to drill into the boot lid itself). I've been reading on the web that I need an Automotive grade or Outdoor-type double sided tape, but I'm a bit out of luck finding one in the shops. I've tried looking at Bunnings, Autobarn, Repco and the likes of Coles and K-Mart but with little success. The best I could find is this from Scotch. It's an Outdoor-type which holds up to 5lbs (2.3 kg). Would like to know if this would suffice or if it's not strong enough to hold it down. Else would appreciate if you could point me to the right direction to find one (please don't suggest eBay cos I know I could buy it off there, but want to knuckle it down this weekend). Thanks!

Also found this at Bunnings, Bear Outdoor Mounting Tape. It doesn't mention how heavy it will hold, but does say it's strong enough to stick number plates, reflectors and badges on cars.

Get another SE alongside if possible so you can measure seven times before fitting!

I'd be paranoid as hell doing this, just a couple of mm off and it'll look out of place.

If you're a braver man than me with a keen eye for detail, then good luck, and post pics once done!!

Unfortunately I don't know anybody with an SE.
To be honest, I am using your Maniac as a reference when I get the job done. There are quite a few close up shots, so am gonna see if that works.

If you have a third brake light that'll save you a lot of measuring. Just line it up with that and centre it.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Thanks, Regie.
I've bought the 3M one that I posted in the opening post and will try it later today. I saw a 3M VHB one at Bunnings earlier, but it wasn't for Outdoor mounting and only holds up to 2lb so I didn't get that (I'm sure this isn't the one that you are referring to anyway). But since the spoiler is pretty light, maybe this one will work. Will let you guys know how it fares.

davekmoore: I think this is your SE spoiler I bought off Rob53. Good thing it's the same colour :)

.. and so i'm facing another obstacle, there are 3 mounted screws; 2 of which can be unscrewed (left and right end) but the last one in the middle seems to be securely bolted into the spoiler itself. As I don't want to drill into the boot lid itself, seems like i'm left with 2 option:
a) sawing off that screw and sanding it down so that its smooth
b) buying a replacement boot lid and drilling into that

Looks like the spoiler ain't going in today. /shrugs Anybody have a spare Silver NB boot lid they want to get rid off?

3M make great products but are not always easy to buy . Even attaching it to a boot still means maybe down the track it has to be removed and a strong d/sided tape can be difficult to remove. It adds weight to the boot ( the spoiler) and probably affects boot closure and does nothing. The picture appears to show a stud which is probably dríven into the moulding ie a double ended stud- in all likelihood a self tap thread albeit 10 12 or 14Gauge -under the rubber washer there is probably a metal washer which is integral with the stud either made by cold heading or even turned. In theory it can be screwed out but another possibility it is moulded in situ. In any event I would not remove the stud. The stud is there for a purpose eg to attach the spoiler. If you are really hell bent on attaching the thing to a perfectly good boot then the right way looks to be drilling a hole and attaching it for a firm fit.

Yea, that's true. I guess penny wise, pound foolish if I'd gone the easy route and just tape it. That's why I'm looking to find a relative cheap boot lid if I can cos I'm a little apprehensive to drill into the original one (i.e. sending it to a body shop to do it professionally). But so far the quotes I'm getting for a boot lid that is in good condition is quite expensive. Hopefully I can find one soon else I would have no choice and get the original one drilled

P/s: Just checking, the NB8A boot lid is the same dimension that of the NB8B?

Yep, I've thought of that but thought to myself that it's probably a good idea to get it done properly even if I had to spend some money on it since I'm more likely to mess things up doing it myself.
