Yep O-disk. I have 15x8 -6 O-disk cr-01 on my na6 and upgraded to nb8a brakes all round without any issues. 195 on an 8.5 idnt a huge stretch to be honest. It should be fine.

At the risk of drawing the ire of stance fans, both state governments and CAMS refer to the Tyre and Rim Association Manual with regard to legal fitment of tyres for registration and for competition. The manual describes the range of tyre profiles suitable for each rim width. If you choose to ignore this (and a large number of stance enthusiasts do) then you could negate your car's insurance, be defected and be knocked back in scrutineering for a CAMS event. 195/50 on an 8-8.5 inch rim is not acceptable fitment legally, even if it is tucked within your guards.

Can you do it? Of course, it's your car. Will it look good? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but a lot of stanced MX5's look fantastic at rest or at low speed IMHO. At normal driving speed they begin to look silly - bouncing off the bump stops and crashing into potholes, and are probably not particularly safe because of this.

My aim in modifying cars has always been to improve performance - looks come second for me, and I wouldn't compromise performance for looks. That's just me though. I'd be fitting 225 or 235/40 tyres on an 8.5 inch rim, adding some guard flares to cover them and reveling in increased grip.

Would you have a link to that specification. I'm quite worried as well about legal issues and with insurance.

lol dont mod the car then. nearly zero modifications are legal.
If they are done within adr's they still have to be authorised by an engineer and mod plated.

Your local tyre service will help you there - the manual has to be purchased for ordinary folk like us. Most manufacturers list approved rim sizes for each tyre size eg from Toyo Australia's website - Toyo T1R 195/50x15 is approved for 5.5inch to 7 inch rims only.

Many mods can be approved Emily, but stretched tyres can't. I know people choose to ignore this sort of stuff and do it anyway, but I'd rather everyone understand the risks involved. Some tyre sellers won't care - a sale is a sale, but some do and will refuse to fit stretched tyres.

Here's a simple scenario - you're approaching an intersection in the wet, you brake hard and the car aquaplanes into the intersection and hits another car. Total damage on the other car say $15,000. Your stretched tyres may not have contributed in any way to the accident, but your insurance company can deny your claim, simply because they are outside legal fitment. You would be left with that $15K bill to pay. Is it worth the risk? Not to me, but you may feel it is. Not preaching to conservative line - just putting it out there for information purposes.

oh i wasnt referring to stretched tyres as being an approvable mod, simply that most mods fail under some bizzar adr.

Also, there are a couple of tyre manufactures that allow a 195 on an 8" rim. I think there is a thread on club roadster :lol:

Im starting to hate this thread. People worry too much about legalities. The only sure fire way to be legal is to stay bone stock. I have wider wheels, bigger tyres, bigger brakes, flares and coilovers. That is just a few mods from the list. Car handles amazing and grips/stops remarkable. Is it legal? Hell no. Does that make it unsafe? Nope. It drives far better than stock ever did and I have no regrets. You guys worry too much.

No they wont. My experience with local tyre shops show that they really know nothing about the laws, with a few trying to sell me 195/50r15 tyres which had a lower speed rating for my old celica. "don't worry about that, it's only a bit smaller..." "oh it's illegal? That doesn't sound right" "offset?" just to paraphrase a few...

Do your own research on tyres. But yeah, the legality stuff and voiding insurance is something to be mindful of.
