I used Dynomat on my doors and like the way they sound when I shut them now. The car also sounds less "tinny" when driving - hard to explain but really noticeable when I first did it..

You got it less tinny thats what I would like to achieve
What about under carpet ? what would I use??

A sound guy I met did a very budget install just to disprove some myths about car sound and sound proofing. For the under carpet stuff, he just used old carpet underlay...worked a treat and stopped a lot of road noise from coming through.

I also used Dynamat on my NA's doors, originally to improve the speaker's sound, but have been quite pleased with the solid "thunk" of the doors when closed afterwards. Yup, can mean something to some of us.

Used the leftover matting on the rear shelf which stopped some drumming from the boot area.

Also have a custom exhaust, but that's different to the "tinny" sounds of certain cars.

The couple kilo's of Dynamat didn't worry me. Roll bar, windbreak, later model seats, alloy pedal covers, stainless grille, R Package lips, chassis stiffening products ... reckon I'd stuffed that idea up already

Why sound proof when you have a loud exhaust note Lokiel?

It's like going to gym before work only to feast on donuts for breakfast and lunch.

I was getting a lot of rattling in my doors (turned out to be the crappy installation of a sound system - done by "professionals") made worse when listening to the stereo so tried dynamat to improve the sound.

I hardly ever listen to the stereo now except on long trips but do like the dynamat addition to the doors for the reasons mentioned earlier.

My last car(hilux) I think it added another 80kg in weight. To a mx5 that's a lot.

On my NB I made a compromise, corrugated foam on the metal behind the speakers continuing up the back of the doors and replaced the plastic door slash guards with a foam rubber membrane that was fairly air tight but would not rattle like plastic. Neither added much weight at all but I think it improved the speakers sound and gave that solid "thunk" when closing the doors.

I think he has no idea how much weight he added.

A bulk pack of Dynamat has 3.345m2.

Dynamat weighs 2.2kgs per m2

So a bulk pack weighs 7.359kgs

I very highly doubt he used 10.9 bulk backs in ANY vehicle!

My Falcon wagon has (from memory) 3 bulk packs, that was 2 layers over the whole roof, 2 layers in each front door, one layer in the rear doors, one layer in the rear quarter panels, and 2 layers in the tailgate.

A single bulk pack is all you'd need in an MX5, plus maybe some carpet underlay stuff, which wouldn't weigh a whole lot.

Realistically, you'd be adding about 10kgs total to the weight of an MX5.

While I'm sure I'm going to get hated on by some of the forum members for this, I sound deadened the doors yesterday.

Wasn't a planned thing, just happened. I was in at a local car audio store discussing my headrest speakers and getting their thoughts on the whole thing, when I noticed they had Dynamat door kits on sale for $100. Quick ring around to other stores in Canberra to make sure that was actually a sale price. Turns out that was even cheaper than the discounted price I was given by the shop I normally go to for my audio work.

I had nothing planned for the afternoon so I bought it and went home to start installing it.

If you've already upgraded some of your audio system and aren't worried about the extra weight (a few kilos at most) I'd reccommend it. Makes the music sound a bit crisper and blocks out a little road noise (and makes the doors sound awesome when they close).

The treatment of the doors is only part of it. You still have the floor pan and the boot area which are also factors in noise. I bet the car can be made quieter if all of it is treated to more sound deadener and with little extra weight.

This, plus an application of Dynamat inside the door behind the speakers, produced a much richer sound from my speakers as well as reducing a large amount of unwanted car noises bouncing around the cabin.

I also applied a small amount of Dynamat to the rear shelf.

Under the carpet, the rust treatment applied by the body shop made a bit of difference, so really doesn't need much to have an impact.

All up less than 3kg and makes the car a more pleasant place to be for touring, even with the custom exhaust.
