Oil around the ignition leads usually means you need to either replace/tighten the rocker cover gasket.
Re: the idle hopefully the cleaning of the AFM with brake fluid didn't harm the electronics.... otherwise try cleaning out the throttle body and see if adjusting the idle screw helps. If you haven't changed your ignition leads that might again be something to consider. (Considering you have already changed your plugs).

Thanks to a very generous member I have now bought a replacement rocker cover gasket. There hasn't been anymore oil, but if/when it reappears I'm now prepared.
I agree about the brake cleaner. . . I don't think any got on the electronics but hmm. . . I have since cleaned the throttle body and have seen a huuuuuge difference.
And yes, that movie is awesome.

Yes! I agree, they make the car look a lot more finished. Was going to hold out for a gv, but am starting to think the OEM style look cleaner. Garage vary lips are so sexy though lol I have decisions to make. . .

Haven't done much since I last posted, but will write it up anyway to have the record at least. . .
Diff and gearbox fluids were changed without any dramas. Cleaned the throttle body which was the best idea ever. I now need to adjust the idle screw as it's idling at about 1300. Found some hose clamps so old they were jingling.
Temporary fix
I wanted to change the fuel filter but when I undid the the cover for the steering column to unplug the fuel pump this fell on my face:
A whole lot of wiring, a semi-connected alarm system and definitely no yellow plug for the fuel pump.
Up inside the dash I found a lot more wiring. Inspection of the alarm wiring diagram and mx5 wiring diagram revealed a couple of extra harnesses and about 6 extra fuses. Some things had been soldered, mostly just twisted and quite a few exposed connections.
I really wanted this to be a DIY but after sitting looking at it for a couple of hours I gave in, taped everything up the best I could and called mx5 mania. I'm taking it in tomorrow to get it sorted out properly
Next on the list to deal with is: sorting out some sort of sound system, actually changing the fuel filter, debadging, deciding what kind of front lip I want, and repainting a couple of things.
I also always really liked the look of these:

New owners must come across this all too often. One of the first things I did after buying my Clubman was remove an old inoperable alarm and I also discovered a similar mess under the dash - but nothing like this! Good luck with the build Bee.

Hi.
I hope you didn't remove the product that was on the throttle butterfly when cleaning the throttle body. If you have then this is the cause of high idle. The butterfly has sealant around the edge which controls the air and therefore idling. You can replace it using a good sealant or something you will have- nail polish. Apply with butterfly closed and before it goes off open butterfly. You will see if you are succesfull it may take a few tries.

Yep. I've "helped" (read: stood around and watched) with wiring cars before and was shocked when I saw this. I'm not sure if it was me, or someone in the past but the sealant you're talking about has definitely been removed. Thanks for the tip about the nail polish, I'll give that a go

So after some internet issues I'm back
I got the wiring sorted out by mx5 mania. Apparently there were 2 alarms in there, one sort of working and wired into the other.
I've also bought a head unit, front speakers, a new (second hand ) steering wheel, handbrake cover, and leather boots for the shifter and handbrake.
I'll post tomorrow with before and after pics, hopefully no more nasty surprises. . .
