Sound proof my SE

Wondering if anyone has gone to the bother to sound proof there MX5 ? and what products and where did they place them.
I had a loan of my friends car on the weekend well actually we swapped and one thing I noticed was how solid the door sounded when I closed it.
This came up in conversation and he told me the hole car had been sound proofed by the previous owner . Must say I like the idea so asking the experts
what they have done to sound proof there MX5 or is there a expert I can pay to get a professional job done in Sydney area

It's not going to make a whole lot of difference unless you use a hardtop and soundproof that as well. Think about it...top half of the car is fabric.

To sound proof. Normally all it is adding weight to all the panels to stop resonance and vibrations. If you can pull apart your car then you can Sound proof. Just clean the area you wish to stick the sound proofing.

Sound proofing comes in many forms.
Dynamat/stp/stinger road kill.
The main purpose of the above is to add weight to any panel of the car.
Then you have things like.
Dynaliner/MLV.
Which is a foam based sound proofing that reduce the amount of sound let through.

The only thing wrong with doing this is you end up adding a lot of weight to the car. My last car(hilux) I think it added another 80kg in weight. To a mx5 that's a lot.

Someone that could do it is FHRX in carringbah. Although they mostly do stereo installs they also do a very good job at sound proofing.

I used Dynomat on my doors and like the way they sound when I shut them now. The car also sounds less "tinny" when driving - hard to explain but really noticeable when I first did it.

It does add weight to the car. If you use a checkerboard pattern instead of a whole sheet you get the same effect (ie. Bare metal, Dynomat square, bare metal, etc). This saves you 50% money and weight.

It's easy to do yourself but use a proper hot air gun, a budget one (aka hairdryer) will overheat and die.

The checkerboard approach makes it even easier since small squares are easier to work with and shape.

It's like going to gym before work only to feast on donuts for breakfast and lunch.

You got it less tinny thats what I would like to achieve
What about under carpet ? what would I use??

Check Lokiel suggestion. Also talk to auto paint suppliers they will have different products including spray ons. Its not a silly idea it depends if the car is annoying to you. The US site did have info on this ie DIY. Essentially you are adding insulation and weight is not going to be a big factor in a small car ie how much can you add for the small amount of real estate. I am not sure how far to go with it but cabin including boot seems a given. One thing often getting poor reviews are noisy cars- the Mazda 3 has often attracted that label.
