Hi.
The starter motor doesn't need to come out however one of the right hand engine mount bolts are in the starter motor bracket. When you are refitting the bellhousing bolts to the engine you will usually but a couple in to hold both together. When fitting all of them don't tighten them right down as you put them in as sometimes the plate between the two can get itself slightly misaligned particularly the starter motor bolts and don't tighten the starter motor mount bolt at the engine mount have it relatively loose so you can move the starter to line up. Have fun. I cannot fathom why mazda need so many bolts to attach the engine to the transmission.

Thanks, I needed to take the starter out first. Nice surprise to find an Exedy clutch.
