Alternator terminal bolt replacement?

Postby Mr nanotech » Thu Apr 04, 2013 4:54 pm

quick ref pic to make this easy:

See that bolt sticking up at the back with the black shroud around it? I need a replacement one of those. It bolts onto the back of the alternator and the +12v power wire nuts up to it. It was arcing so I had a look at it and of course, the nut was loose so I went to tighten it up and sure enough (classic Mazda...) the captive bolt snapped off right at the base leaving me nothing to nut the power cable onto!
The alternator itself is fine and I really do not want to have to buy a whole new alternator as it's only that piece that broke. It's a serviceable item and after going to Mazda, I found out they did make replacements but have long since stopped manufacturing them.
I don't actually know what this part is called though I do have the part number for it: N337 18 W80

However my searches haven't turned anything up.. If anyone has an old busted alternator, I would appreciate it heaps if you could send me just this part. If anyone knows where I can find a new one, that would be even better. Right now this is the only thing keeping my car off the road. I want to put my megasquirt, supercharger and all that jazz in but this is slowing it all down.

Thanks. Josh.

Dude, call next time.
You know we've got all sorts of sh*t lying around.

We've got a flocked alternator as a doorstop to keep the back door open. Pretty sure it's still got the bolt.

You remove the bolt and then you can see if its a buyable item- you will have to remove it anyway. You can go to a engineering supplier who supplies fasteners. It may have a special head and maybe not. That might be a lot quicker solution. The photo merely shows a bolt thread not a head. You can guarantee that the thread is a standard metric type. Generally engineers try to use stock fasteners but sometimes they have to make ones designed for special applications. There are many fasteners that are not readily available like ones with knurls and round flat heads or T heads designed to go into tracks etc. Any any event looks like its covered.

Shame I had one of those not 2 months ago, if only it were still laying around in the shed.

The thread is 8x1.25 as morlock said, a bolt shop and some locktite or JB weld would sort it out just fine.
