Hi Dan.
What brand of filter/casing is that on those two pictured?

Get booked for going 230+kph?
In the end its not that you want torque, its that you want the car to accelerate harder at lower rpm, An intake and exhaust will do that but may cost 2000 dollars and gain only 5-10% where as a turbo setup will be closer to 4 but gain 100%.
I would put a cheap second hand full exhaust on, along with any intake you can get your hands on for very cheap (<100) dollars then go buy some cams for 500 and hopefully get 20% for 1000, rather than 5-10% for 2000.
To clarify, HP is torque x revs. torque alone doesnt do any work to move the car, so when you want it to go hard through the midrange you want more torque in the midrange (which means more power in the midrange). When you want more top end power you want more torque at higher revs (which means more power at higher revs).

Re: Advise on intake/inlet filter kits (NB8B)
Watch those puddles mate....
Ive gone a cheap
One of these for the intake. The inside is smooth and less restrictive. It is not a K&N, but the flow rate doesnt know that, so save your bucks.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/99-05-Mazda- ... 860wt_1163
Induction wise, ive got an 01 so ive ditched the passenger foglight, gone to jaycar and got a 45 degree pvc extendable subwoofer port for $15. 2/3 holes line up with the ones used to mount the fog light and its exactly the right diameter funnily enough. A little work with a dremel to trim a few spots and a drill and your done. Extend the port till it hits the hole behind the passenger headlight and cut at an appropriate angle so it sits flush, then put the screw in the side to lock the position and silicon her up. Now at least you have cold air getting under the bonnet.
Due to the foglight mount the flange doesnt sit flush, rather it allows for drainage. I did this mod after the floods runnning a pod in front of radiator job and got paranoid of hydrolocking it with all the water around. The foglight area is nicely shaped to catch the wind and even when its pissing down, ive pulled over to check for water in engine bay, so far nothing, presumably due to the 45 degree angle.
The other thing is heat, look at a trackdog heat shield to further shield the exhaust manifold. Also i have wrapped my intake tubing in the fiberglass tape normally used for wrapping exhausts. In this case it keeps the heat out rather than in.
In winter on the highway my fuel economy is ridiculously low... noticeable power improvements and the whole thing job was well under $200.

Re: Advise on intake/inlet filter kits (NB8B)
I guess I'm probably heading towards a kit that bolts to the MAF w/o removing the OEM intake pipe.
Ok, wasn't able to find a photo of one in an MX5, but was wondering if anybody had any experience or comments on Pipercross' Viper Induction Kit? So far the reviews I've read has been encouraging (lotsa positives on the panel air filters) as compared to K&Ns. About $255 delivered
or perhaps the K&N Apollo CAI? for $110 delivered (although the pic is of an NC)
Hmm...

Re: Advise on intake/inlet filter kits (NB8B)
both of those kits are universal. meaning whilst they will fit your mx5, there is still going to be some custom fabrication you will have to do, like a couple of brackets to hold the maf and pod up, and to secure the flex-hose to keep it in position.
and you will need a silicone adapter to couple your maf and pod.
None of this is hard but it diy and will most likely involve several trips to the hardware store and/or repco
If you were going that route, it would probably be cheaper to order a 3" enclosed pod from ebay and some 3" flex-tube also. Would be alot cheaper!

If the 100 dollar ebay one gets you 5hp and the 300 dollar one gets you 6hp which way to you go?

Let me flog my product here. They are Works Engineering units. The filters are made by Simota, which have been independently tested to outperform K&N (both in flow and filtration)...and yes, it does cost a bit more. Just do a quick internet search and you'll see a couple of these tests including one that Mark Pakula (Kula) did a couple of years ago whilst at AutoSalon.
The Works Engineering kit on the surface looks similar to the K&N unit but you'll find that the intake hose is more durable and utilises a reinforced rubber hose, not a convoluted plastic tube. It is similar to the Piper Cross one, but doesn't collapse on itself.
In the examples that Dann has however, he's used stainless piping.

Re: Advise on intake/inlet filter kits (NB8B)
okay, pardon my ignorance..but what's a silicone adapter and where can I get one?
thanks, emily. obviously the DIY route in terms of a standard pod filter and flex-tube would be a more sensible and cheaper option for the similar gains (if any, besides noise) that i'm gonna achieve.. but to answer Dann, well I would pay a little premium to get a little bling in the engine bay, but that's just me (not 300, but maybe 200).

Re: Advise on intake/inlet filter kits (NB8B)
Being able to TIG stainless means that I can do whatever designs I want but the fact that I've used these kits and only use the filter/housing and clamps goes to show the good value of the kits even if you throw out some of the bits it's still good value. This is not K&N tax but they perform great.
To the Op do you like either of the intake I made?

Hmm.. I'm gonna take a guess that lobster back has got to do with the bends of the steel and not a photo of a fisherman holding a lobster (Google...tsk tsk!) I like the finishing of the first picture, the engine bay with the strut bar. But I guess the design would be slightly different on an NB8B due to the engine layout, ABS etc..no?
What filters are being used for the cars in the pic as they look similar?

Re: Advise on intake/inlet filter kits (NB8B)
Yeah the lobsterback one you kind of have to see in person, its the workmanship that you have to appreciate not the look of the whole thing you know.
Both are works engineering intake kits, I buy the whole kit, and then cherry pick the parts I need, as I said just above even using only half the parts its still good value because the parts are excellent quality and the price is very reasonable.
Yeah almost everything Ive ever made is custom made exactly how the owner of the car wants to suit their needs, its unlikely that Brenden could sell you his intake and have it fit on your NB, on top of that different air flow meter etc.

Re: Advise on intake/inlet filter kits (NB8B)
A silicone tube, one side attached to the maf, the other side attached to the pod filter. it is necessary because the maf is a smaller diameter than the pod.
I can vouch for the works engineering kit, really nice quality and lots of fittings.
Just get NitroDann to build you a kit. If you were looking at spending several hundred dollars anyway, his will look a lot better, bolt straight in, and give the maximum gain possible from an intake.
