I just spent about $2,000 on making some horsey's for my NA8, I took the head off myself and took it to a performance engine guy, shaved the head to 10:1, ported and CC'd the chambers. While waiting for the head I match ported the manifold and deburred the throttle body. I also took the cam's to Camtech and reground to both 8.5mm and 256 deg advertised, serviced the injectors and ceramic coated my 4,2,1 extractors and metal intake tube.
End result is I think about 5 horspower (WTF).
I also to finish I added adjustable cam wheels so I played with them so power is maximum.
In theory I was expecting around 30 horsepower, where did this go wrong guys, I should have spent the 2,000 on a turbo.

Do you have before and after dyno charts for the car? If so post them here, if not how do you know how the engine has responded to the changes?
There are a number of things that could be wrong.
-even though the head was ported, did you make an improvement to flow?
-Match porting the manifolds can be detrimental, as it can upset air speed and entry angle to the port
-Those cams aren't overly big, I wouldn't expect much of an improvement with them by themselves
-What inlet manifold are you running?
Cheers

Hi there Woz
-How do you mean "did I make any improvements to flow" do you mean did I do more to the manifold ect to make it flow better or did I bench flow it, I didn't get the engine guy to bench flow it Silly me trusted him.
-manifold match porting was just an open up to match the head, the head guy used the new metal gaskets to measure where to grind
-I know the cams where ground a little small, i'll keep you all posted about that lil outcome
-standard inlet manifold
Thanks heaps
A
Ok,
Put simply, if the cylinder head was ported incorrectly it is possible to make it flow less air, rather than more air, and it is also possibly to create air speed problems also. If he has created a situation like where he has made little or no improvement over std in air flow then power results will be disappointing as well. Has the guy had previous experience with these engines?
Match porting of inlet manifolds can create air speed and flow issues also, great care needs to be taken to ensure that the port entry angle isn't upset also. In alot of instances where you don't have experience or a flow bench to check results the inlet manifold is best left alone.
Cheers

Thanks again
Are you sure the shop didn't hear this as "I want it to still drive mostly like stock, but with a little more power"
As opposed to "I want a bit more power, I'm willing to lose some low end pull, within reason"

Re: Disappopinted $2000 spend
sounds like a story i'm familiar with. Haven't done anything on my mx5, but did similar mods before on a b16a vtec civic (high lift/duration cams, ported intake & exhaust and shaved head to bump compression)
car felt less responsive after the mods because we had to retard the timing due to the higher comp causing slight ping.
This effects torque which for most is what you describe as "face peel" effect. spent countless hours after just tuning the v-afc, s-afc and s-itc (hahah aftermarket ecu's were unheard of in the amature car scene back in the days). but only once you get the fuel & ignition timing right, will you actually see benefits from those mods. Even then you prolly need to budget 11-15hp only...doubt you will get 30hp

Just putting it out there, would putting an svt motor in instead been more beneficial for the cost?
Looking for an SVT motor for this:

Re: Disappopinted $2000 spend
Hey Guys
I spent a little more and got an adaptronic with a dynotune.
115 kw's at 7,000 rpm, It now pulls along pretty well. The tune guy still needs to fix the pinging and jerkiness then it's all good

Interesting, what was your starting power figure before the ecu + tune?

Re: Disappopinted $2000 spend
nope, no hating here. I was just curious thats all.
So are you still disappointed with what you have now? or has it finally paid off with the ecu + tune?

For the amount of money I spent in heinsight I would have done a turbo, it's been about $3,800 now, but I have never been a fan of turbo's but more a grunty/lumpy engine. If I get 115kw at the rear (7,000) then thats about 155 horses which add about 20% to bring to the flywheel which brings it to 185 horses at flywheel.
Not so much the tune it was the adaptronic that really helped I think, the guy sold me an innovative wide band guage on it to make the tune easier, which I like. I hide it in my glove box so I can have a quick looksy as to my air/fuel ratio.
Thanks

No comment ATM it's still pinging, kangaroo hoping and even worse when cold.
The tune guy blaimed the big cams but refer to previous comments
