Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Dann, you really have to read it two or three times.
Cylynder head must be that the model came with, and may only be modified by the means of porting/shaving.
There is no restriction on cams etc. It comes down to power to weight.
Engine Block can be from what ever, ie mx5/laser/323 etc. but retain correct head.
Next round we will just do what we want like everyone else and see what happens!!! Why have rules if u don't want to exclude any one? Makes no sense. And confirms those wanting trophies will cheat or ignore the rules to achieve this.

If its not mentioned it generally means that you can't do it... thats where a lot of problems come about

Haha... look Lou everyone makes a few mistakes with inexperience, the move he put on Tasker was a little ordinary and he clearly punted Luke Otten but everyone has seen the footage and to me you kinda threw the toys out of the pram after getting a little schooled from the new guy, im sure in all the years you have raced you would have unintentionally removed people from a race anyway.

Doesnt mention cams, piston choice, compression valves etc.
But I gather from this that an NA shell with a VVT engine is totally legit?
Dann
Yes as long as its the same family of engine, pistons, cams & valves are allowed to be modified/changed, mainly with the block you just cant go more than i think 2 oversizes for 2F

So in 2b only an Nb can have a VVT motor but in 2F an NA can have one?

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Well just having a quick perusal through the rules there I think you could probably argue for an interpretation of those rules in either direction, but the VVT has really been shown to not make a huge difference in a race car anyway... Turbo cars have performed fine with or without it and all of the SPs in 2B are replicas anyway so you could argue that it was originally an SE and didnt have it like CTs car was... most of the time these arguments hold up particularly at such low level racing for something that isnt worth any real net gain.
Also there is no real point in running 2B unless you want to run as an SP replica so there is no point building a 2B NA.... even the SE is 2F eligible with the right restrictor, Dad has built a 2F legal SE for a guy and its a pretty quick combo to run fairly cheaply.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
I wouldnt have thought the Shelly's NB's were 2F, more 2B, yes?
I have been racing in MX5 challenge on and off (missing a couplefew rounds) since Jan 2011. I have raced my lightly modded Na8.
I dont have big budgets, I do what I can myself, infact this year I only just got an ECU for it!! It has intake, exhaust, ecu, coilovers, and built to 2F spec. Its a cheap-arse 2F car compared to others. I run always at the back of the back. Im there for fun. I joined the Mx5 challenge mainly because its a cheap-ish motorsport event. like most, I have a mortgage and a child so the funds and priorities arent all with motorsport. Guys like the Shelly's have much bigger budgets, and as you mentioned little decks, they bought an EVO and radical!
while I wasnt at that meeting where things happened, I havent had any issues with the Shelly's and this is just a general comment (not pointed at anyone) I have noticed over the couple of years is that the guys/teams with bigger budgets will go 11/10ths and not care about the little bloke sometimes while the little bloke maybe a good steerer, just in an underpowered car.
in saying that, Im happy to swap cars with one of the faster MX5ers for one race this MRA...ust to see how I go hahaha
Also, I have considered doing the VVT/SVt swap in my Na8 as Im sure I'd get slightly more power than putting cams in my Na8 + retune.
thoughts on that? Lou, you were in the 11's consistantly in the ebay special hey?
Id be happy with that being on my tight arse budget!

I dont know about Jakes car but the one Steve was driving was 100% 2F, that car was one Dad and i originally built for ourselves in the garage at home... we made it super light, like ridiculous... stripped the whole car to scrape all the body deadening from underneath the car and all the sound deadening too... we took the locking mechanism and hinges off the boot and just put 4 bonnet pins on it... saved a tonne... even all the cabling for the fuel lid release... took the barrel of the steering column and just set it up with a push button start and ignition switch on a panel we made to blank off where your radio normally sits... took all the redundant wires out of the harness... saved a few kgs there... we just put a tonne of hours into saving tiny bits everywhere, the exhaust on it went out the side in front of the rear wheel so the exhaust was really short and light... just a heap of tricky stuff that we wanted to try and it ended up being a very quick car... the other thing is that Dad has always built his 2F engines to chase mid range not so much top end which proved to be quicker for circuits like Wakefield and she wasn't a slouch when we drove it at Phillip Island either... and thats the sort of stuff that can make a big difference to the cars pace... and none of it was more expensive just more labor.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
For someone who is just getting into mx5 racing, this is a pretty depressing discussion. I hope not everyone will be walking away from it in disgust.
Similar to weevil - I am doing this to have some fun, and compete. I have no expectation of winning as to some extent - no matter what type of racing - that will come down to he who puts the most $$ in. But as long as I have a few cars at my level to battle with, have some good contests and walk away smiling, I am happy. I am not a spanner guy so am behind the 8 ball in the $$ department already.
So far - BIG smiles, but I hope there will continue to be be good people to race against

There is nothing stopping you from joining the club and putting your hand up for a position on the committee. Last time I checked they would welcome you with open arms. But I doubt you'll do that keyboard warrior.

I have to agree with you on this, my plan was to 'race' this year but due to work roster (and engine not done) it was not to be, so looking forward to 2014. However I'm still planning to go to the Victorian 6 Hour Relay in August this year irrespective of my roster.

Mazmad,
Thats what most of use race for, to have fun. Mike (Total Tools)Paul (crewman)Henry, Angelo and a few others would all race together all day long,
never rub panels (but sometimes Henry would forget)run side by side and all come back to the pits at the end of the race with a bloody big smile, shake hands and piss ourselves laughing like school girl caught with their knickers down, and just have a ball.
Our wifes thought we were mad and they are probably right BUT at the end of the day "we had FUN'.
Unfortunately some seem to have forgotten that at this level of racing that is ALL it should be. If your racing in this catagory at anything over 18 years of age sorry but you have missed the boat and your not gunna be anything but a part time racer.
As for being behind the 8 ball when it comes to mechanical work, ask and I know others will help you, just gotta ask!!!!
Will I go back and race, bloody oath, will it be in Prodsports, probably. Does it have to be prodsports NOPE!!!
What makes this class fun is the people, and if others want to keep changing the rules etc, then whatever!!!
Keep doing what ya doing but most importantly have FUN!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't take life too seriously, its too bloody short.

I feel like I missed out there Terry. Thats all I wanted to do. How do you put the fun back in it though? I just can't under stand it. You look back a couple of years, look at all the cars running. There was only a handfull of cars on the grid, last time out. The thought, of all those race cars up on blocks not racing 15-20ish. How do you get them back out on the track?
Must be honest, I would rather be lapped by the blokes in PSQRAC any day than a NASCAR!(there panels are worth more).
