Good question. They've been around $1,500 for a long time, mostly from the Jap parts importers and wreckers, but I just noticed the Boaks had one for $1,200 and there's one in Brisbane now for $900.Kenstaki wrote:manga_blue wrote:Reasonable NB8B (VVT) engines sell for around $1,500-2,000 these days. This is probably your best and cheapest option for a road car.
Thanks for the detailed advise. Where did you get these figures from?

Re: Looking for engine options
Easy to have one trucked to Melbourne give the Sydney mx5 specialists Deckspeed and mx5 Mania a call, they always have engines in various states of rebuild around.
And yeah bummer it happened good on you for just getting on with the job of sorting it. S&$t happens we all f&@k up on occasion

Not having a lot of luck, try Targa Racing, Berkeley Vale NSW.

Probably worth a call to James @ MX5 Centre in Kensington Vic just in case he knows of someone who's selling one: http://www.mx5centre.com.au/

Re: Looking for engine options
I've had some luck, three motors with varying degrees of mileage.
There's one with about 90K on the clock but is a bit pricey, I may pull the trigger on that one rather than having my MX5 just sitting there in the driveway, wasted.
Someone even offered a block and head on Gumtree but I'm not that keen.

More work but it could pay for itself and even have enough over to pay someone to install it - have you looked at buying an insurance write off at auction? Keep the engine, sell the rest. Its amazing what you can sell online.

Just curious, where are these auctions you speak of? I've heard of Pickles but don't know much about them.

Re: Looking for engine options
are we missing something here- I think so. If there is a problem you first diagnose what it is. It strikes me as pretty silly to be looking for a 2nd hand used motor before finding ot what is wrong with this one. Whilst it was probably a bad plan to have dríven the car with a knock its still worth having a trained person to either listen to it or remove and inspect. Its easy toi jump to conclusions. I would also not drive it again if it's knocking. When you have more info you may then develop a plan.

Re: Looking for engine options
Engine changes are easy. Disconnect everything necessary, reconnect everything. Booyah! If it won't start, work with the basics, and work out what isn't right/ isn't connected. Easy as. Just takes a bit of time and patience.
For engines, try Allmaz at Clayton. Great bunch. Tell them Pam sent you!
