NitroDann wrote:Turbo is NO WAY near 10,000. Turbo can be 2000, hell you can drop the car at my place with 3000 dollars and Ill give you a turbo'd car with JUST the basics, around 150whp, and then you can add bigger injectors, blow off valve, clutch, exhaust etc as you go if you want.

Yuge only made 135hp because he had girl cams (No offence intended to any of the forums ladies of course). If he had big compression and 'ManCams' hed have made 170-180whp.

it has to be around $10000+, first i need to get this http://www.mx5mania.com.au/turbo.php at the bottom, then i need to install and tune, all together at least $10000 in once.

Absolutely not.

I have done it for under 2000 before.

Why is this question being asked in the Motorsport section?

I cannot see how you get a turbo without spending at least what the OP expects....unless you can do the work yourself. And even then parts alone will be above that. Just for a decent chip and tuning will take you well above $2k. What are we talking of using, vacuum cleaner parts?

Dann does conversions for far less than 10k, and they're decent.

My only motivation for seeking NA mods is the cunty Victorian EPA laws. Chances are I'll bolt a snail on down the track anyway. I could always get it registered in a different state

Woz - after some advice
I have a NB8A which has had new pistons and rings. Is there much performance to be had from intake/head modification?
I don't particularly want to pour money into it when in all likelihood I'll bolt in a turbo later. But if there are mods that I can do which will add benefit now and when a turbo is added, well no reason not to do it. Well other than dollars of course :D

Absolutely. Any mods you do to the cylinder head and intake will greatly benefit a forced induction application. Combined it makes the power curve fatter, more power on less boost and drivability is also greatly improved when done right. Anything you do to increase air flow and air speed helps the turbo spool better. It's win win when done correcty.

Cheers

1500 would go to the ecu and tune and the other 1500 would go to me to build the turbo gear.

It would be a T25, log manifold, 2.5" downpipe to the stock exhaust, without an intercooler, it would have water and oil lines for the turbo and an intake.

It would run at the limit of the stock injectors and clutch and make 150rwhp, an improvement of around 50%.

If you can find another way to get 50rwhp for 3000 dollars Id like to know(not nitrous).

You realise all the Vic EPA laws apply to n/a as well?

Basically anything more complex than an intake and exhaust is illegal here.

Yes it sucks, but that's how it is.

I've never understood the comment 'my car's undrivable on the street' - provided you aren't wearing your 6-pt and HANS, and that it is actually registerable. (clearly, I've never had such a car  maybe in a few years)
Out of interest, what do people consider to be 'undrivable' on the street in terms of an NA engine (or even a race-focused turbo)? - no power below 5-6k rpm, big cams making the idle erratic / too high? Or is it the ancilliaries like having to uprate the clutch = too irritating in stop/start traffic?

This is true but a road side inspection is not going to detect head work and aftermarket ecu. A turbo on the other hand stands out like balls on a dog

True to a point, a turbo is more obvious, but in this day and age inspections for for ECU or piggy back systems are very common, and so are emissions sniffers to detect internal modifications such as big cams and richer fuel mixtures. No one is immune now. And alot of current laws apply to intake and exhaust mods. It will get to a point where any modifaction whatsoever will be deemed an EPA or roadworthy problem.

Is it really that bad for cars down here? I've run bikes with race ecu's and exhausts for years and never once been defected. My Buell 1125 did trigger a copper to ask if the exhaust was legal but no more was said. Wasn't the reason he pulled me over though :)
That bike had a straight through race system with no cat and an Erik Buell custom ECU. It would've failed every test from noise to emissions. Rode it every day for 2.5 years and only got pulled over the once. Which was for overtaking over single white (don't get me started on Vicroads changing that law!)
