Thanks rxmx, I'm going to first try to DIY them but when that fails I'll definitely look him up :)

The engine is back in the car, no pics because it's been raining since it was installed. I made the sump 5mm offset towards the passenger side, that's how far I thought the engine was but it turns out the engine is offset 10mm so there's very little clearance for the sump on the drivers side (2-3mm). I think I can get around 8-10mm by some *slight* filing of a couple of the welds and a tiny bit of the subframe. I'm certainly not making another sump :(

Anyway, tomorrow I'll be cleaning the injectors and modifying the exhaust for a bit more ground clearance. That will probably take all of Saturday and Sunday and then I'm back at uni. However I have Tuesday and Friday afternoons off, as well as all of Thursday so I hope to have the car done really soon.

Left to do: mounts for the new mirrors, a new intake pipe, slight modification to the exhaust for more ground clearance, install the rear NB brakes :D

Then it's pink slip, unregistered vehicle permit, emissions test, engineering, blue slip, rego.

Probably done by next Christmas

I drove the car for the first time today! However it seems to have a weird issue which I'm hoping someone can help me with. It sometimes backfires through the intake when it's cranking and doesn't like to rev very well.

I suspect the cam timing is 1 tooth out but I can't be sure, does anyone know what else the problem could be?

For the backfiring during cranking it can be simple as not enough cranking power. Try jumper leads onto a bigger battery.

Otherwise there are the usual candidates for the rough running: ignition timing, ignition leads, plugs, fuelling, valve timing.

I've exactly had the same symptoms on a DOHC Fiat of mine but I hesitate to mention it cos it's so rare: sheared exhaust cam lobe.

I'll just say plug leads (cos I haven't said it for a while) !

Thanks Manga and Bruce,

I'll put the car on the charger tonight to rule out not enough power, and check the cam timing tomorrow. It could be leads but I want to rule out the possibilities which don't cost any money first :)

Just charging it may not be enough. With the amount of use your car's had recently the battery might be sulfated and you'll still need to jumper off a good battery to see if the car will crank and fire normally.

Well, I found out two of the plug leads where not on the correct cylinders, hence the rough running (top tip: don't let your mates put the plug leads on when they're not labelled :P)

IT LIVES! Again... It's still leaking oil from, I think, the base of the dipstick. I made a new fitting with an o-ring but I don't think it's worked. I'll have to investigate this weekend.

The video also shows the new intake piping I welded up at TAFE :D

It's not leaking oil anymore! It turned out to be from the base of dipstick where it connects to the sump, even though I made a new fitting with an o-ring seal. I ended up putting a tube over the base of the dipstick and hose clamping it.

That's right, IT DRIVES! It was such a great feeling driving it :D Even though it cuts down to 5 cyls at heavy throttle (it has new plugs, I'm fairly certain it needs new plug leads) and is running very rich, it has so much torque. It's next to impossible to stall it pulling away, this thing is going to be FUN when it's tuned.

 well done!
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Jealous!!!
I have the klde mx6, feels torquey with close to 1300kgs. Wish I could do that to my mx5 when I get one.
That car would be amazing!
Have to do some vids if you haven't already.

Cheers Paul, Bruce, Okibi and Dan. It sure is a great feeling driving the car after ~18 months and so many setbacks.

Next monday I have a week off in which I'm hoping to install an idle control valve, tune it and possibly take it to the engineer :D My aim is to have it completely finished ready for rego by the 7th of April, we'll see if that deadline works or if it's just like every other deadline I've had during this project, hahaha.
