Need advice about sway bars......

Postby BLU-125 » Thu Feb 21, 2013 9:38 pm

Fitted Eibach springs with second hand Bilstein shocks. On Monday my second hand Kaaz is being fitted. I obviously will need a bigger front sway bar. Will a 21mm Whiteline suffice? Tyres will be Nankang R type 195/50R15. Car will be used for Hill Climbs & Sprints........and probably motorkhanas.

You are right.

problem is you have asked a question that no one who hasnt dríven the car can answer, and your reply to yourself tell sus you already knew this.

I have whitelines front and rear combined with TEIN suspension - with the whitelines the front is set on the first of two settings and the rear on two of the three settings - it's like it's on rails, not the fastest car on the main straight but can match it with other MX5's thru the corners - tyres are KU36's on 15 x 7.5 6UL's

I'd suggest on 18th have a wander around the pits when you get a chance, ask a few questions with other drivers and find out what they are running, any settings etc, they're a friendly bunch!!

See you there

Its far more complicated than that and without sitting down with a calculator nobody can suggest anything apart from general advice.

Happy to discuss my setup with you at Lakeside. Also happy to lend you a pressure/tire temp gauge so you can check your tyre temps and assess your suspension setup. It would also help if you know your alignment settings as well.

Dann, whats the trade off for going too big a swaybar?

Obviously it will increase the effective spring rate if you hit bumps with one tire only. But only half as bad as having spring rates that would give you the same effect on body roll. By the same logic if you hit a bump with both wheels, ie a speed bump, it will have no effect on the spring rate, as both end of the bar flex up equally(ish).

Ive got koni adjustable/king lows and a 24mm whiteline in an nb8b and the bar made a world of difference to cornering speed and stability. Maybe i just lucked out, but out of curiousity (and being an engineering i should really know this), what other factors come into play?

Have a look here http://www.nastyz28.com/pthandle.html scroll down to the **** SUSPENSION THEORY BASICS - by Pierre Dupuy section. It is basic but good reading.

Thank you all for your general input, which is really what I need.

Magpie, I will definitely be in touch at Lakeside.

Sent from my grey thing using electrons, I think.

Bit of a Luddite, and find it amazing I can go online from my 'phone.........but hate Hawaiian pizza.

After a bit of a read, it seems that I will wait and see how the MX-5 handles before making any more changes.

Thank you for the offer, but I suspect that it is my rear that may need upgrading. I'll know more on the 19th.
