Well after much deliberation on finding a car that would be fun and competitive in the NSW supersprints, reading Gurans great thread, and seeing the great value provided by the NSW mx5 club trackdays - Ive purchased my steed!
Its an (almost) stock 1992 na6. Only non stock item I have noticed (and will be replacing) are a set of king springs. Body is rough, but price was reasonable. Picked it up from melbourne last weekend, and enjoyed ziping around the town with the top down!
Before the 1st supersprint round on the 24th march I have some work to do.
Key items are:
- get ACT rego so that I can sign up to the NSW supersprint championship. Given that the entrys are out for the 1st round I have to do this fast!
- install cage (agi half cage has been ordered)
- replace suspension with stock items (if anyone has some stock na6 springs they would like to part with please let me know!)
- install seat, have a base model Sparco ready from my other car
- and fix a 'clunk' in the rear end (ive yet to fully diagnose but it may be diff)
- general service
Ive also become a member of the NSW mx5 club - so looking forward to meeting lots of other mx5 fans! Some of the ACT mx5'ers may know me from my little white hillclimb micra k11, which unfortunately I will begin parting out to fund the new adventures.
Thanks,
Climberjoel's supersprint na6

Re: Climberjoel's supersprint na6
thanks Koop. "looks" is the operative word, unfortunately the paint is much worse in person!
Well I figured out the clunk in the rear - diff was going out and got progressively worse. A new 2nd hand diff is now in, and all is well.
Ive sent my entry in for both the supersprint championship and the 1st round, but I'm yet to get confirmation of the entry's.
Ive got quite a few maintenance and replacement parts on there way to be from various places worldwide, which should be all I need to freshen the mx5 up and make it legal for class 1A. New oem shocks are coming from the states ~$600 delivered when Mazda spares parts here wanted $600 for each corner!
I'm aiming too have the car ready by Marulan drive day on the 10th March for my partner to drive, should be a fun day out.

Re: Climberjoel's supersprint na6
Welcome Joel! You're going to love supersprints and MX-5 club trackdays in a stock NA6. Learning to drive them quick is a major challenge, but hugely rewarding too.
My diff went bang on Saturday morning which ended my plans for a Winton trackday on Sunday. I have managed to find a replacement thanks to Carco. Now I've just got to pick it up.
Here's your laugh for the day. I got a quote for a new diff centre from Mazda: $1748.30. Bargain.

Re: Climberjoel's supersprint na6
Hey Joe - nagh may come spectate but I will be competing in less hillclimbs this year to be able to afford the supersprints. Will still be at all the khanas I can though!
Guran, sorry to hear about your diff. I got my new diff from carco too, what are the chances? And yes, the challenge of an mx5 is what I'm after - I'm looking forward to learning new skills as a driver. Hopefully we can get three in class 1A.
Now if only I could get confirmation from NSW supersprint on my entry...

Send an email to Bob Welsh. He's usually extremely prompt with confirming supersprint championship entries. Might be on holidays? Or did you mean your round 1 entry? For that you'll need to contact Joan Vaughn at Mini Club - she's also usually very prompt with confirmations (by snail mail).

Thanks Guran. Got in contact with some CAMS reps today who were very helpful. Bob Welsh is currently on holidays which is why the regos have stalled for the moment, but Ive been advised that there shouldn't be any problems. If anyone else is waiting on a response this would be why.

Re: Climberjoel's supersprint na6
Hi Joel, it will be interesting to see how the MX5 compares to that quick little Micra. You will have a heap of fun.
If you haven't upgraded the brake pads, I would recommend some good pads in the front before you supersprint, as standard front pads cook up very quickly. I run Hawk HP+ (from Mania or on-line) NA6 pads with stock Lucas NA6 pads (from Carco) in the rear.
Hope I will see you on the 24th at Wakefield.

Re: Climberjoel's supersprint na6
Thanks Peter, Ill definitely miss our SDMA battles though! The micra is being parted out and sold off.
And thanks for the pad tips, that's actually the combo that I have on the way to me at the moment. I wanted to go with some QFM A1RMs, which Ive had great experience with, but unfortunately they were out of stock.
In other news, my AGI half cage is now installed and tyres are here. Still waiting on some goodies from the states though, and then I should have most of the things i need for the mx5s debut at Marulan on the 10th.
Also been confirmed in the supersprint series - certainly lots of other mx5s! Unfortunately though it looks like Guran and I are the only two in our class so will likely be bumped up.

Re: Climberjoel's supersprint na6
I currently have A1RMs on the front of my NA6, and have previously used a few sets of HP+ pads. I prefer the HP+ because they give more initial bite and sustain a higher braking rate with less pedal pressure. The downside of HP+ is that they are easy to lock when cold but you learn to work around it. Seems to me that the A1RM pads need more heat in them than I'm able to generate with my stock setup. They also chew into the rotors much faster than the HP+ pads. I'll be reverting the HP+ for my next pad change.
Yeh it's a shame that there's only two of us registered for class 1A. We only need one more stock NA6 entrant (or any other stock 1.6L car) to make this class a goer. However I finished second in 1B last year so you're still in there with a chance.
