You want to notch the pipe so it fits together as nicely as possible to give the strongest join. Ill be mig welding the cage as its stronger.....The guys at http://www.rollcages.com.au/ have done testing on the joins both tig and mig welded. Tig joins start to tear alot earlier than mig welded joins.

This is looking down where the corner bar beside your head meets the leg of the main hoop on the passenger side.

I've opted for 38mm diam front legs to keep visibility to a maximum at the "A" pillars.

Why do they say mig tears later?

Why doesnt all high stress welding get done with a mig?

I've chosen to go with a full cams level duel occupancy cage . So this chassis will never be limited to any certain event. this the level of cage you need for Targa events.

Image

Because the mx5 cage is so low and the contact points between the bars on the main hoop and legs means it is incredibly strong. This also means that there isnt much room in the cockpit with all those bars. I ran the harness bar behind the "x" in the main hoop to give the a little more room for adjustment on the harnesses . I ran the "X" bars to the side bellow the top bend but still within 80mm of the intersecting rear leg. This will allow the seat to go back an extra 50m.

Looks tuff as from the back 8)

The car is sort of back together
New (second hand) drivers seat hks edition bride zeta 3. I highly recommend this seat! the left shoulder bolster is smaller than the right giving that little bit extra room to move when grabbing gears and handbrake levers.
Image

I painted the cage with the VHT anodized blue......because i wanted the jap cusco look. Also thanks to Mr LIGHTYEAR for the hardtop that weighs nothing! Note the "X" in the main hoop comes in below the bend to allow me to get the top of the seat back under the main hoop, every half inch of extra leg room helps. The harness bar is bent at each end so it sits behind the "X" to give just enough room for buckle adjustment on the harnesses.
Image

Side intrusions, "A" pillar bars and solar powered "maiko" doll in the old airbag hole.
Image

Sadly the side bolster on the seat was worn before i got it. The side intrusions have one bend out towards the door at the elbow for maximum cat swinging room.
Image

The windscreen bar is bent both ends to get it as high as possible up out of line of sight.

I have fitted a new hydro handbrake slave and lever as well. I used to run the 3/4 size but it didnt have enough power, the new 5/16 one locks the rears alot easier.
The "dildo" shift knob may look a bit "Bosozoku" (japanese bogan) but its amazing how much it helps just taking your hand from the wheel to slap down a gear and going from handbrake lever to down shift is also much easier than trying to find a small silver ball that barely sits above the shifter boot. (i used to run a voodoo knob).

Cage and car is looking great!
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
