On my son's first club run other members took him under their wing and made sure that he enjoyed the run safely (he enjoyed the run) and I enjoyed the run because he was being looked after. I have done other none club runs with him and I always make him follow me as I will not do anything to jepordise his or my licence if we can't keep up then we don't simple. Public roads have rules and it is not worth the risk to break them. Race tracks are for racing however even on the race track there are rules.

I feel that my son is safer on the club run than the general road because if we are traveling on the road together the way he gets treated by other road users is completley different to the way I get treated, for example braking distance, space left when pulling back in after being overtaken. The only difference is my car is blue (and modified) and his is red with P plates and STOCK, they are both MX5 NA6's.

I have no complaints about the way QLD Car Club runs their runs, they encourage the use of radios and even bring spares along for people to borrow, they make sure the group does not get too stretched out and make sure everybody enjoys the run.

We've had L and P platers attend countless runs but they don't have the pressure or distraction of convoy rules to contend with.

Glad you and your son are having a great time Magpie, the MX-5 Clubs of Australia constantly work hard to provide this type of experience for their members.

I have received speeding tickets before so i'm "no saint" either but I do understand the level of responsibility I have when attending a club run.

Before every one of our club cruises we have a driver briefing where everyone is told to drive within all road rules and be courteous to other road users.

If runs finish at a Brewery or Wineries then drivers are reminded not to drink and drive.

Even this forum has a clause for sponsors must accept before they can advertise here:
"It is the responsibility of MX5Cartalk.com sponsors to encourage all MX-5 owners to practice safe driving and be courteous to all other road users. MX5Cartalk.com promotes a “take it to the track” attitude amongst its members to encourage both motorsport and driver training. Product demonstrations included on the forum must be done in a safe and legal manner."
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I've never been on runs, but while reading through this whole thread, one major point stood out. The road laws are laws, and no matter what car you're in or if you're in some 'whatever run', it doesn't give you any right to break the law. If you insist on doing so, at least don't endanger other's lives in your efforts. It's as if it's a video game to some of you, and don't feel the consequences are severe enough if you get it wrong.

doctor_bob wrote:We can discuss it like adults or you can go on and on like some B grade law movie prosecutor with your weak attempts to corner people with words... I got the distinct impression several posts ago that you don't want to discuss whether there are underlying problems with breakfast club runs at all, certainly not offer any solutions to problems; just feel all high and mighty because you managed to prove to yourself that someone else is a bad person, from that high, high horse of yours

I offered advice for anyone involved to be very careful about what they had posted here, and to ensure that clubs running this type of event cover their bums. You're the only one that has posted anything about my comments offering no solutions, others have thanked the input. Seems you're only interested in yourself, not your club. As for your original post and "cornering you with words", I really couldn't give a toss, if you feel the need to defend what you said go ahead, but the fact you I have asked you for a simple explanation on several occasions of what you meant and your refusal to answer speaks for itself, and we'll let the individual who is reading this thread make up their own mind of its meaning. Perhaps the adult thing to do would have been the approach of HJT and the club president do you think? rather that bang on with cryptic posts?

You want to talk about admission of guilt? Let's see, Brendan is complaining about everything everyone else did, but has admitted several times to breaking the exact rules he is complaining about being broken by others; his only justification is that he didn't want to spoil the fun... Not only that but from the position of a Red P Plater he only has to go 5km/h over the limit before being disqualified. If someone who is fully licensed decides to do 10km/h over the posted limit it is a very minor slap on the wrist for them. By the book of the law, and consequences considered, who is really being more irresponsible in that situation? Most of the responses, particularly yours, have really hammered home my own accusations of mob behaviour occurring in this thread.

The hypocrisy lies where Brendan somehow has the right to blame his actions on everyone else present. I say he's responsible for his own actions, but due to his emotive language that is really where this discussion broke down before it began as the mob had already decided he was an innocent victim. Everything I've said in response to the original accusations, if you bother to read it, has been an attempt to boil this down to the version in which firstly, Brendan is no saint, and secondly, the ridiculous exaggerations of criminally fast speeds are not present (not referring to my responses to outside observer fuddy duddies such as yourself; you're not even in the MX5 club right? How does this concern you?)

If you read back I did suggest that Brendans posting may have been exaggerated. However I have also read 2 admissions on here to being over the speed limit (we won't count your cryptic post just to keep you happy with yourself). Somehwhere in the middle is probably the truth. Shouldn't you be more concerned about why Brendan felt the need to post here rather than slag him out? Why do you feel the need to single out him? others have come forward about the situation as well.

I am a member of 2 CAMS affiliated clubs, and a road user, that's how it concerns me. Regardless of whether they are MX5 clubs or not is irrelavant. Does it make a difference in your eyes about my right to comment and to post on this forum does it? gives us some insight on your ignorance. At such events you a representing every car enthusiast, not just your local MX5 club.

Car clubs (or for that matter any car enthusiast) don't need persons such as yourself representing them, i hope someone sends you your membership back for making a complete ass of yourself.

I'm done.

And unfortunately many clubs/enthusiasts are their own worst enemies.

The guys from Boostcruising will do a cruise and speed, the MX5 club labels them morons and then justifies itself with "but we're mature people enjoying our cars responsibly (over the speed limit)"
The Camaro club then labels the MX5 club as morons and justifies itself with "but we're mature people enjoying our cars responsibly (over the speed limit)"
The Ferrari club then labels the Camaro club as morons and justifies it with "but we're mature people enjoying our cars responsibly (over the speed limit)"

(note, the club names are just ones I pulled from thin air to represent some of the basic groups)

Each group thinks they're responsible and the others are giving them a bad name becasue they speed/etc.

The problem is, the general public don't give a sh*t what you're driving, they'll label all of them as hoons because they're speeding.

Guran wrote:Thanks for the suggestion Sean. Our club already has a collection of UHF CBs for Sydney, Canberra and Hunter Chapters, and just bought several more for Illawarra and RPM (Blue Mountains) Chapters. Mid North Coast will be getting some too. Nearly all of them are 5W units in order to give the range needed for a large group. They were quite useful on the run I did this Sunday when we had one guy take a wrong turn ... three times (no problem, we got him back). Mobile phones with hands free are also used for tracking down those who get seriously lost.

No stress mate - Anyone who remebers runs where I wasn't leading the run will confirm my ability to get lost and how valuable of a tool the UHFs were to me/us.

They didn't call me Waldo for nothing

Don't take offence to this Dann as there is none intended, But I've noticed a bit if a pattern in your posts of reference to older drivers. I was the same when I was your age ( I think it's human nature). But thirty years later, one thing I've learnt is that AGE IS INEVITABLE, & before you know it, it'll be you reading similar posts from the young fellas. Hopefully you'll smile about it as I am. :)

Well done Brendan - me and Dann share the same date!

I'm just a little older than him - I think!!

Now let's see - today is 13/2 so 15 more this month + 31 March + 11 April = 15+31+11 = 57!
