Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
I know 2" can support 400rwhp with no issues at all.
Look basically I have to go from 38 (or 40mm whatever its close) to 50 mm, which is the compressor outlet to the 2" intercooler piping. It has to change size at one point.
Im sure your intercooler piping doesnt go from 38 to 50mm instantly there must be a taper (One would hope). So I was going to use a 1.75" OD pipe out of the compressor so that only about 3 inches of pipe would be near the manifold (and even then there will be 40mm clearance odd) do the first 2 turns in the 1.75" because they are small and tidy bends, and then taper up to 2" and into the existing silicone piping.
The car will consume 200+ Litres of air a second at full boost so I cannot imagine how long it will spend in that pipe so I reckon go for it?
Also sean its a racecar, so the only traffic it will encounter will be 911's and Lambourghini's at 1km drag events

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
For what my opinion is worth I think either option A or B is going to work for you.
If option B is easier to build and with 40mm betwixt outlet and exhaust you should be able to get a couple of layers of ACL heat shield or something in there.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Racecar should see lots of flow though to pull the hot manifold air down and out the back, or up through a properly vented bonnet.
The ACL stuff is AMAZING too as mentioned - If this is the car you're often playing with (Patrick I think?) I'd go the low route with tapering pipe like you're thinking - sounds like you have a good working relationship and can always switch it up if it becomes problematic.
I'm more street reliable/repeatable focussed with my preferences, but with a turbo 5 you should be able to achieve that in a race car too - a few of the guys here do. That said, the only serious race car I've ever played with was quite limited by the rules and not an MX5... Plenty of fun though

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Yeah I even went a little small on the manifold runners (1.25") in an attempt to get some midrange and if it just doesnt work 103%, I can sell it and go again, having said that for our goals Im sure it will work, Im just giving you an idea.
Basically nothing is on the turbo side of this car so ALMOST nothing needs shielding. With everything machined dead flat and no gaskets to fail, resbond everywhere and 10mm inconel where its needed, along with a turbo brace and 2 downpipe braces, I reckon we should be pretty bulletproof.
Been wrong before lol.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
I was going to ask in my post about the down pipe...looks like it would all just be hanging off the flange but as usual you have got your shiz together and have braces planned

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Did some today. All of the welds are not complete, and of course I need to fix that leak still and then assemble the car with proper fasteners etc. Dyno next week.
New exhaust, 3" mandrel SS. V band at the dump pipe, high flow 'cat' and the biggest magnaflow that fits.
My dump pipe vs the AVO one.
And this is how it looks finished but with a few welds that need finishing.
The intake wasnt my first choice but will have to be completely redone with the addition of the EFR so I figure for now it will do.
WOOOOOOOOOSH !!!
Again anything that anyone thinks is rubbish or should be redone or could be improved please start typing.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Looks alright to me dude!
Esp like the thought to brace the top of the turbo - could be neater, but I'm sure you'll tidy that up and the rest looks pretty good.
Will look king with the manifold etc all caoted up. Is the plan to just swap out the flange with the EFR when that time comes or was this manifold designed specifically with the GT in mind?

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
The smaller EFR's (sub 500whp) are a direct bolt onto a T2x setup except they have a 3" V band rear, which will just require a single cut and a single weld to fit this downpipe (the EFR is a little longer so it will go straight on easy.).
Everything else bolts up not just the turbo flanges including water and oil lines etc.
Yes the bracket was just made with what I had laying around cut up and welded, it will do for now.

Won't suck too much warm air from the radiator will it?

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Well its not ideal but its probably not going to be noticeable at all even on a dyno. Even if the intake air temp is 350 kelvin instead of 300 kelvin once it hits the compressor at the compressors max flow rate it will end up at 500 kelvin odd and then the intercooler will do its job, the lovely thing about delta T is that even if the air into the radiator is 5% hotter coming out it will be less than 1% hotter.

Hi Dann,
It looks beaut, If this is not what you were doing it could be jewellery.
Best.
Greg.

When you turn your car on, does it return the favour?

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
was gonna say the intake position just might make the intercooler work a little harder. if the intake is hitting ambient or there abouts 2/3 along the cooler it might just take till 3/4 along.
98 evo gold - rotrexed and loving it.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Thats what I think, the miata turbo guys have mentioned the bend on the intake pipe and suggested just putting the filter straight on the turbo but of the filters we had neither would fit in that position, on the dyno we can do runs with this and totally unfiltered without any intake and compare.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Here is the exhaust.
It has 2 braces and a V band.
Its tucked as high as I could get it, a flat floor and diffuser will fit with ease and clearance.
It also has an extra piece of SS rod on each of the hangers to make sure it never moves.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Nice work Dann, the only thing I would change is to extend the hangers further around the pipe to spread the stress. My race car has a tab at the rear similar to your gearbox mount and it has cracked out and taken part of the pipe with it. I don't have tig so I welded it with a stick welder I inherited from My grandfather
I'll soon need to do a whole new zorst for the race car to match the 3" dp I recently bought, and the plan is to do a similar system to this with a single muffler instead of the side pipe that is vulnerable on curbs. What's the go with a magnaflow for a turbo race car where noise is not so much of an issue... Biggest can that will fit or smallest can that will bring the noise down to an acceptable level?
