Not sure these objects are supposed to have fallen off the bottom of the motor into the undertray??!!

Is the rod in upside down?
I once raced an evo, and after the bottom half of one rod was in upside down, I know because I saw it.

If the rod's somewhat misplaced might it make a single big bang and cause long flames out of the front as you're rotating on a 1m x 50m self-created oil slick?

I thought that was meant to be a training day?
If it helps you feel better then the head on my car came off a turbo NA8 that did exactly the same thing and yet the head was undamaged. It's possible that all you'll need is a cheap worn out block and good crank that you can have built with rod and piston type goodies. Obviously it'll need to be stronger than the last one was.

Frankly, at the moment, I might drop a second hand normally aspirated lump in it if this is going to be a more cost effective and reliable fix. It'd certainly help with brake and tyre wear! What do you reckon?

Yeah id just drop an NB8a in it and bolt it together (with all the SE gear obviosuly).
I imagine it probably wasnt detonation but your piston tops will tell you for sure.
Maybe go with a psi less boost haha.

Try to find an early NA8 block and put your SE head on it, otherwise it will be missing oil and coolant feeds for the SE hard lines.
Is your "unobtainium" SE sump OK? Hopefully it and the MBSP are, otherwise you will have to do an oil drain like mine:

Judging by your pic the dark coloured piece of shrapnel would be part of the block and the silver one would be part of the sump. Spectators said the car was pinging badly on the straight before the corner where it let go although neither I nor my instructor could hear it. So watch this space for evidence of something like a piston seizing and a rod parting company with it and having a flail around. Here's hoping the head's ok at least.
No doubt there will now be heaps of advice on how to sort it out including on further advice on how to upgrade everything while I'm at it. There are three things I already know: 1. It needs a cleverer ECU than the Haltec along with some kind of effective knock sensor and 2) I can't affordany of it yet and 3) Yes, at 126,000kms I know there's no point not doing the (original, standard) clutch and then it might as well have a lightened flywheel, and then, and ............ Bring on your ideas!

Yup. The flames went out the front of the intercooler. Exactly what the corflute was designed to do!

Any of the ms2 or ms3 ECUs have CLT or IAT temp retard, which might have helped. I guess it depends on what you think caused it. Knock detection is a std feature too, so that's another that might have helped when det was too much!
