Removing Heater and Blower Unit Safe without discharging

Hey guys,

I've stripped out my interior for the purpose of grinding away rust and removing all the sound deadening and needed to ask for some advice.

I was just wondering, is it safe to the heater and blower unit from the cooling unit without discharging the system. I won't be pulling out the cooling unit, but would like to remove the heater and blower unit to get at the rust (if any) and sound deadening behind those two units.

The workshop manual I'm using doesn't list discharging the system throughout the heater removal process, however it is listed in the A/C removal process.

I'm pretty sure it isn't required if I only remove the heater and blower unit but i'd rather be on the safe side and ask someone who's more experienced than myself.

If you're removing/disconnecting from the TX Valve/anything connected to the evaporator, you may need to discharge the system.

If the rust you're referring to is on the air vent pipes behind the dash, you should be fine.

(P.S I take it you're removing your dash and performing something similar re: rust removal etc similar to http://revlimiter.net/blog/2011/08/miata-dash-restoration-project/)?

As long as you don't touch or undo the hard lines going into the AC unit then you should be fine.

Dash has already been completely removed. Thanks for the link MrRevhead, I was trying to find something that like to do a resto on the dash.

I had to sand off surface rust on the floor of the car as well so I pretty much just went ahead and decided to find any rust and get rid of it before it gets rid of the car lol.
