Are they talking about the exhintake cam? It was apparently a semi common swap to get another exhaust cam, do some light machining ( cut the end off) and put it on the intake side?

I would trust what Edwin 'TheMan' posted. As he said, only North America had the BP4W intake cam. And I think the specs for the duration are incorrect on the 949 racing site. Much longer than the really are.

The only oem BP 96-00 solid lifter spec cams I'm aware of are:-

231-8.99/241-8.89 - BP2Y on them, 96-98 BP from 323s/Lasers
237-8.28/242-8.89 - BP4W/BP5A not 100% sure, but guessing USDM spec non turbo
241-8.79/242-8.89 - BP5A USDM turbo miata, also guessing AUDM non turbo spec

Edwin doesn't assume. He collects the parts catalogs from various markets, so he normally has concrete proof before the starts typing. I cannot say with 100% surity that he is correct on this occassion, but he is rarely incorrect.

Maybe you could call MX5Plus and ask them. They have openned 100s of these engines.

As for mild cams to put in, ask Wozzah (forum user), Maruha, Toda, Poncam etc all sell cams. most will have between 252 and 256 duration and around 9mm of lift. Some will require new lifters, some will work with the oem lifters.

I've gone through a few cams in the past few years. Had the Maruha 252/9.2 256/95 spec F-cams ready to go in, then found out I didn't have HLAs, had solid OEM lifters. Sold them and brought Toda billet oem base circle cams in 256/9.0 in/ex specs. Didn't know it at the time, but as I said earlier, 323s/Lasers in the BP05 engine went from HLAs to solids in 96.

I have regrinds available for $460 pair (or $230 for 1), anything up to about 270deg (smaller available). Direct fit, may require some ECU tweaks on a 99 but shouldn't be any problem for someone in the game to tune it.
