Aircon advice needed

Postby Basho » Tue Sep 04, 2012 6:24 pm

I'm getting aircon fitted to my NA6 the thought of another frakin SE QLD summer without it nearly frightens me.

I can get a complete NA6 system fitted for the right money using second hand parts but run the risk of the compressor unit crapping out quite quickly just due to age and a probable extended period of previous disuse.

I have had a look around on Fleebay and I've found new aircon compressors for 93-on but nothing for 92 -back and I'm thinking that the 93-on is for an NB.

My car is an NA6 with a four groove take of pulley , it's never had aircon.

Will an NB compressor run an NA system ?

What damn models of compressor am I actualy looking for ?

Any advice regarding airconditioning an NA6 would be gratefully received.

Here are links to a couple of compressors I found

I suspect it's probably the change of gas. NA8 covers 94-97. I'd call MX5plus or Mania for advice as those guys would be pulling off AC gear off half cuts all the time.

Do you have all the wiring interior trigger switch, relays etc?

Nothing attall , never had aircon from new , it's a reluctant mod I have to say , if I was anywhere South of Newcastle I wouldn't get it done in a blue fit.

'Plus' will be doing the job so it will be good and after talking to Jason the decision to put a new compressor has been made , the local one is $800 and the same thing from the US is $550 inc freight at my door , however I'm stlll awaiting confirmation from the US supplier that the US NA6 Denso compressor is capable of running on R134A gas reliably as apparently the US is still on dirty ole R12.

Denso predictably are no help.

I'm not overly confident in even a new NA6 compressor at the moment as they don't seem to have much reliably cred and I'm wondering if they're a very old design and origionaly intended to use R12 gas and just don't handle the R134A gas well (which is apparently a fair bit heavier than the R12).

I'm hoping someone on here has a bit of knowledge about this and posts :D

My car is a 1990 NA6 Eunos that had aircon from factory, but in 2010 the previous owner got it regassed with the newer R134A gas. The compressor is deffinately the original unit, and is working fine, it works great actually :)

Thanks for that , it would seem that perhaps the problem was the R12 not the R134A ? from what I understand all the early Australian delivered NA6 's had the aircon fitted by the dealers pre delivery not factory--perhaps there may be a lesson to be learned in there somewhere--?

Try Snowee Air http://www.yellowpages.com.au/qld/woolloongabba/snowee-air-12203480-listing.html. I've heard he is very knowledgeable about systems and has done many special installs, so should be able to advise on an MX-5.

Thanks very much for the link , I'm pretty sorted now , it's just going to come down to more for an Aus supplied compressor, advantage, local warranty on the compressor or the same compressor from the US with cash back warranty --ah hem-- then calculate the frieght to send it back if it goes crook.

The compressor price difference is $250.00 cheaper from the US at the door.

AND--- For the record-- if anyone is wondering , the USA has been using R134A gas since it was legislated into law in 1995

How much did it cost to get it installed?

Dan, might be a long wait before you get a response. Basho traded in his NA late last year and he hasn't log on since Jan 2, 2013.
