Re: New series MX5 Racing in brisbane
And the prices listed are for the very best of, brand new and by the looks of it fitted for everything. I mean. As an example a fire extinguisher is 19 dollars not 50.

And the quaity of the $19 extinguisher compared to the $50 is pretty easily seen in terms of the fittings used and the brackets for the extinguisher.
As with everything to do with safety, if you are happy to compromise fine, but I suppose it's like the old Bell advertisements, $10 helmet for a $10 head.

You obviously haven't had to use a hand held extinguisher if you can't see the better quality in the pressure vessel and the discharge fittings between a cheap and a good quality extinguisher.
Why you would scrimp on $30 for something that could be difference between a a few hundred dollars and a mess to clean up and a complete loss is beyond me.

Re: New series MX5 Racing in brisbane
I have used one, Ive had car fires twice now.
Ok lets move on, rollbars are a non wear item and are not 800 second hand, wheels also etc etc.
The point is that its not as expensive as has been said.

How many of those items (like a tail shaft loop) is mandatory by the track body / AASA vs the organisers? I struggle to see how that is really going to be the key safety issue on the track when driving a convertible car!?
Those other items like a pyro tyre gauge, or rims etc are really not mandatory are they?....c'mon be reasonable!
But I would agree that a few items will be necessary to enter, but we wish to keep it simple and affordable, but without making it outright dangerous.
G
All the items like tail shaft loop and ignition cut are mandatory by both racing organisations. The tyre pyro is optional but a good quality gaudge is mandatory if you want your tyres to last more than a few laps, and it is suprising how much stress you will put on rims and that you will need a couple of sets, plus do you really want to race on your street tyres, or drive on your track tyres????
The roll cage is mandatory for both organisations, but to different standards, so build it to the highest standard.
Yes I do motor sport bbecause of the danger, but that doesn't mean I am going to skimp on anything to make my chances in a big shunt any less than they have to be. In 25 years of racing I have been lucky, only 3 big shunts, 2 of which wrote off cars and I am still here because I didn't skimp on safety gear.

Re: New series MX5 Racing in brisbane
I dont want to argue, Im only saying that buying everything brand new and having someone fit it is not the only way.
I do infact intend to drive my daily straight from the garage to an event and go door to door on its daily setup mid year.
There ARE ways to show up and have fun. Dont act like you are throwing money away cos you are a major baller race car driver.

I am.
I want a way to class based on power to weight, and the power to weight determines how many point you have left to spend on mods like tyre and aero.

Re: New series MX5 Racing in brisbane
Some experts that I know who may or may not race every second week and own 10 MX5's reckon that you cannot have a budget class that allows non factory turbos.
Apparently it becomes budget crazy however Im still not convinced a classing system based on proven power to weight cannot work.

Re: New series MX5 Racing in brisbane
How would you have the power determined?
Everyone brings in a graph each round - or once and everyone goes on good faith that they wont tweak the car - does the graph have to be within a certain time period before the event? Would the weight be determined each round as well? I suppose the scales don't have to be super accurate, but consistent at least. Each car must have a full tank of fuel when weighed?
I just wonder how you keep it fair, the costs down and still enforce the rules with power/weight?

Re: New series MX5 Racing in brisbane
Everyone submits a graph from a non corrected dyno of the same brand and a weigh bridge readout with full fluids.
Power to weight of every car is open to view and It becomes very clear who is bullshitting. Anyone who calls shenanigans is free to request a dyno run at the directors discretion and pays for it if they are wrong.

Re: New series MX5 Racing in brisbane
As for a fire extinguisher, try a bottle of lemonade! Shake well, finger over the top to make it spray and job's done! My late father was in the industry almost 40 years and at 'demo' shows of 'top shelf'' products would show what could be done if the emergency arose! Friends were travelling back via Canberra to Wagga Wagga and the brakes caught fire on the boast trailer - a bottle of lemonade did the job
For the record, he was a Country Manager for Wormald - in those days the Manager did everything from Country Shows, the Lemonade demo was to show what could be done
Now - would CAMS Scrutineers pass an esky tied down or require it to have a bracket??
Like helmets, a $10 hat for a $10 head!! But to each his own so long as it's approved and meets the relevant AS
Keep up the good work Nigel and Grant

Re: New series MX5 Racing in brisbane
Slightly OT apologies - re tailshaft loop. Is an mx5 considered to have it 'passing through the cabin' with the shaft in the drivetrain tunnel?
From cams : "4. have any propeller shaft and universal joints, if passing through the cockpit, fitted in a fixed casing; "
Hey Matt - as far as I am aware AASA does not require this, or a cage for that matter - all they specify is ROP
