I've given in, for fear of contaminating the fuel tank I'm taking it to the mechanic next week. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions I'll update on how it goes and what it was as soon as I know

I've had my car since April and always had this issue. In the beginning I just dealt with it and took 10 minutes standing there to fill up. I found that if I put the nozzle in not too far and put pressure on it in it seems to work fine. The other thing I usually do is fill up with a pump on the opposite side to the filler cap. Just pull it over the car and fill up that way, so far doing that has worked every time. I just assumed it was a normal thing.

So i got my car back from the mechanic, its what i thought it was. there is a one way valve at the entrance to the petrol tank from the filler pipe that was seized shut and just needed a bit of TLC!
