GSlender's Track Beeotch!

Postby gslender » Sat Oct 20, 2012 9:09 pm

Just purchased my 2nd NA6 which is a Silver 92 with 270,000k and stock everything. Single owner with complete history and in very clean and typical condition for a 20 year old car with nearly 300 on the clock, and is actually really nice to drive.

Came with no AC, no power steering, no CD, no hard top, no extras at all really... just a car with a purpose.

Plan to swap/transfer/migrate all the "go fast parts" from the current green LE - I'll be returning the LE back into its original form and enjoy driving it around as a comfortable 1990 sports car.

Photos and further progress will be forthcoming...

Ok, so will be tackling the engine removal next week.

Have ordered some gaskets in preparation:

3X oil pan gasket
water pump gasket
water pump inlet gasket
rear main oil seal
front crank seal 2x camshaft oil seal
inlet manifold gasket
exhaust manifold gasket
16x valve stem oil seal
cylinder head gasket
water pipe o'ring
cam cover gasket
front cover gaskets
thermostat housing gaskets

Anything I'm missing?

I've rebuilt a 2.0 GTV Alfa engine, and done plenty of other wrenching, but looking forward to this challenge. Any advice or tips?

I will be sending out the head and block/crank and will be keen to get folks recommendation on how to do that (ie with stock pistons and get them to balance and resize/hone with their choice of rings, or what?)

You mean the two half moon gasket? There is no actual gasket that goes around the oil pan, i believe you would need gasket goo for that.
Also don't forgot to change the woodruff key, depending how damaged it is.

Edit: spell error.

Woodruff key! Yeah, guess I should take the pulley and crank bolt off now, whilst the gearbox is connected to the drive train to make it easy.

Also, thinking of using stock bearings and piston rings etc. with 200-250 whp I'm thinking safe yeah? But will get them balanced and checked along with the block etc.

Was reading up on cylinder block prep and find that hot honing is best. Is this common and would most places do this?

You want to get a honing plate made up as well.

Interesting. Do you know of places that do all this?
