Tumut to Tathra NSW

Postby Blesif » Wed Jan 09, 2013 11:07 pm

My personal favourite in NSW is the Snowy Mountains Hwy which runs from Tumut to Tathra. It is a superb combination of mountain passes - Mt Talbingo the Tumut end and Brown Mtn the Bega end - smooth road surfaces, fast sweepers, dramatic scenery changes, attractive towns and villages with good stop offs, lookouts, wild horses from Kiandra to the top of Talbingo and so it goes on. It is superb in the autumn. Just be careful of roos in the late afternoon or early morning along the section from Talbingo village to Tumut (or vice versa) running beside Lake Blowering. There are some other wonderful roads, especially in Victoria but none better than this NSW masterpiece. Its a one day affair, just pick the right day. If you do it just before Easter and start from Tumut you can end at Tathra wharf and watch the full moon rise over the ocean after a beer and an early dinner at the brilliant Tathra pub - stunning.

Guys

Great roads, great area!! One thing to watch is WOMBATS along the section from Tumut to the bottom of Talbingo. I have a lot of memories of that area, a couple of notable ones were competing in a round of the NSW Rally Championship that was run in the hills on the western side of Blowering Dam and thru almost to Tumbarumba .. that was 1976 and we ran a 1970 Datsun 1600 and that would be one of the best events I've ever run in, I think it was a full field of 75 cars

Another was around the same time when I took a September day off and drove from Wagga to Cabramurra via T2 Power Station, started off fine so I stopped in Cabramurra for a drink and all of a sudden it went clouded and started to snow!! That was in a '74 180BSSS, so it was down to Kiandra and across to Talbingo in almost blinding snow!!

A good little detour on that run is to call into Yarrangobilly Caves, it's been a tourist thing for many many years, originally a prison farm where the inmates did the lighting work and pathways thru the caves - I assume it's still operative. Also at the caves if you don't mind a STEEP stumble downhill and one hell of a trek back up is a thermal pool, even when it's below zero you can still swim!! Just freeze as you RUN up to the change rooms!!

EXCELLENT DRIVE FOR ANY NSW MEMBERS LOOKING FOR A WEEKEND AWAY :D
