A-Pillar Gauge Pod

Postby spikes » Mon Jan 07, 2013 1:36 pm

Hey guys, is anybody running gauges on the a-pillar? Want to share some pics and where you got them from?

There's tons of guys in the US running them in the LHD Miatas but I'm unsure if their LHD gauge pods can be flipped around and installed on a RHD car??

easily fine-able modification in Brisbane, you should find out if it's the same in NSW.

I still need to look into all the rules of modifications in NSW. My 5 will be getting engineered after the engine swap and turbo is done but

In my personal opinion, I think those style pods are really ugly.

So wrong

they are not illegal at all!

On a NB, from my correspondance with the RTA Tech dept.

Because it would be mounted behind the steering wheel, and below the line of sight over the dash its fine!

If ANYONE can please prove me wrong ill eat my hat.

The ADRs concerned deal with hitting your head in an impact (not possible if mounted low on the a pillar) and also deals with line of sight (again not possible if mounted low on a pillar)

Cars like a 200sx, where its generally mounted higher, usualy in front or level with the steering wheel pose both collision risk and sight risk, thus on many cars it is illigal.

But not on a MX5 if mounted low.

here is a copy past from Technical_Enquiries@rta.nsw.gov.au dated 16/03/2012

David. 1 The RTA have no regulation that require a shift paten for a manual transmission.

2 Internal sun visors are required under ADR 11.

3 A gauge can be mounted to the right side of the steering wheel and no higher than the steering wheel.

Regards Kevin.

Now, i disagree with point 2, as ADR 11 doesnt say sun visors are required, it just says how to build them....... so really, this i guess could be wrong, but i will add that i personally HAVE READ the ADR in question...... but basically, there is no reason why you couldnt stick a gauge pod on the pillar

No! LHD gauge pods cannot be flipped onto RHD. You need to get a RHD specific pod.

Have you tried contacting MX5 Mania - http://www.mx5mania.com/product1665.htm

dave2221 makes a good point, I have mates with S14s and other silvias and they have a single gauge pod on the a-pillar for their boost gauges, came factory like that or something..

Reading ADR rules now..

It's illegal because its higher than the steering wheel. As you mentioned above.

I believe Aus S15s had the gauge pod removed to meet ADRs. as long as you mount it low and as far back as you can it wont be a problem.

If you buy a mounting cup and mount that to the existing pillar trim you can mount it as far back and as low as possible.

JDM S15's had them standard and I've no idea what loophole they used, but if a car came with them they are ok with the law because it's OEM.
ADM S15's did not have them removed, as they were never fitted from the factory.
I've never seen any standard S14, JDM or ADM with them standard.
