Fuel filling issues - NB8A

Postby Josh2232 » Fri Dec 28, 2012 1:18 pm

Hey everyone,

i hope you all have had an excellent christmas! Just recently when filling up my NB8A ive been experiencing an issue where the bowser continually cuts off every few seconds because the petrol seems to be bubbling up very quickly. Before several weeks ago i had never experienced such an issue and had the perfect filling angle worked out. However now, regardless of petrol station i continually seem to have this issue. I have tried all kinds of angles and amount of insertion (hold your sniggering) of the pump but i cant seem to make it cooperate which leads me to believe that it is not the bowser but my car that is the issue.

If anyone has any idea about what could be the cause of this or has experienced this first hand i would love your input as it is driving me nuts.

Cheers!

PS before you ask, no the petrol tank is not full. :D

Is the little flap inside moving OK?
Beyond that, don't stick it in so far (I am cracking up!)

Blockage in the vent line? Air can't escape from the tank and backs up the incoming fuel.

Don't know if this helps or not but with my NB8B I find if I put the nozzle in the filler in line with the body(handle to the rear) I don't have a problem.

I tried what you said Peter but I couldn't find any blockage. Maybe the one way valve in the filling line isn't fully opening or something, next step is to remove that. I'll have to wait for an empty tank methinks

I think you will find it was the pump nozzle. They do that sometimes, and it is a real PITA

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

No - but there'd be one at every station that has pressure sensing issues.

One of my 90s Mazda cars does the same thing, and it is pretty common as other owners have the same issue. Shoots out 100ml of fuel, then the pump goes click.

I find turning the nozzle/handle 45 degrees towards the back of the car stops this problem, haven't had a problem in 10 years at the pump since.

it has nothing to do with the filling technique or different servos. If it was ok before then something has changed and it must be related to pressure / venting release.

Yeah that was what I was thinking, I was only able to inspect the rubber section of the breather pipe and I need to get some large pipe cleaners or something to feel whether the blockage is where I can't inspect. From there do you think it could be the venting on the top of the tank? I'm not sure how to get to that if so

It sounds like your sticking it in too deep! i found if i gave it a little jerk while pushing it in it would go really deep (you dont want this). i think the fuel hits the side of the tube and causes enough resistance for bowser to click off.. i had that problem when i first got my se.. just try not putting it in so far. I also have found some of the really new bowsers here in wa are a little too strong and click off as you get close to full.

Nice username.

Anyway I've found like the others that if I hold the handle towards the rear of the car it works just fine. Only issue is if it's held too high it seems to block off the flow.

Yeah it really isn't how I'm holding it, seriously gone down every avenue with that. Going to have to do some disassembling soon. Thanks for the input everyone!
