HURRICANE EXTRACTORS

Hi guys my Missus said she will get me a set of extactors for my Na6 as a late Xmas prezzy... i have been looking around and have found this on ebay:

i have tryed to find mx5 forums that may have info on any1 that has used them befor but i cant find any... i have found a few reviews from other cars...honda's, commo's and what not and they give good reviews... i just wanna see if any1 here knows about them... also another brand i have been looking at is Xforce... so what u guys think?

I would do a bit more research/ memory says that extractors are not necessary on NA NB but a T&C exhaust can be done for about this price - drive in drive out and you get a good note and a little more performance. PCMX5 knows quite a bit on this subject.

Extractors ok improvement on NA's as the cast manifold isn't that good,NB on tubular manifold seems efficient.

No experience with Hurricane but have found XForce to bre efficient and durable on my NA8.Had Genie's on my own NA6 and they were great,think they are still available.

I alrdy have a cat back system... thats y i was looking at getting extracktors... but your saying it wont do anything?

Dunno about Hurricane specifically, but there's a small gain to be had on a stock or fairly stock NA6. This gives you an idea of the differences:

I run Stewart extractors on my NA8, along with the rest of the Stewart system & a high flow cat.

pcm and 93 have covered it . You have to weigh up whether its worth the money- the system still has to be fitted.

Lots of BS in this thread.

Stock headers on all mx5s ever are tubular but rubbish bends and amazingly bad collector.

Good gains to be had on all systems with replacement extractors.

I just did extractors intake exhaust on an integra type r which has nice headers and free flowing exhaust from factory it's also one of the most developed engines ever from the factory making 140 odds flywheel kilowatts from a 1.8L. despite being so well developed that car gained nearly 30hp at the wheels with intake exhaust in top of the amazing hp per litre it already made.

Apu's car. He has dyno sheets to prove it.

My experience over about 10 different mx's on the dyno is what i based my opinion on but obviously Dann has other ideas and he may be right.

Aussie delivered(as distinct from US cars ) NA's had a cast manifold but from NA8 on the manifold was tubular and on all the results I have seen extractors replacing tubular manifolds made little difference while replacing the earlier cast type made a reasonable difference.As always if you are chasing the ultimate KW then extractors are a gain and but the size of any gain depends on the total set up of the car including the rest of the exhaust.

to the OP,go for some extractors!

But then again there is" a lot of BS in this thread".

I have two (2) NA6 cars and neither of them have cast manifolds and both are the stock item. Not sure I've ever seen a cast manifold on a NA6.

AFAIK Stock NA6 is a tubular manifold of a 4-1 design. The collector is fairly high up and the primaries will have a noticeable crush at the end as they join into the collector.

If anyone has a photo of this "cast manifold" I'd love to see it... being that I'm supposed to have two of them :roll:

Should have said tubular from NB8A on.Obviously i am wrong Guran, will try and find an old manifold and check again.but not withstanding that the comments re dyno figures on replacing NA manifolds with extractors and getting anoticable gain versus not much gain on NB on remain.

Ive replaced a LOT of exhausts on NA's and have never seen or heard of a cast manifold ever.

You can argue about peak hp gain all you want but area under the curve improvements are whats important and extractors ALWAYS deliver.

A good set of 4-2-1's gain mid range massively, because they do a great job of scavenging.

Heres an artists impression cos I dont have graphs on me, however Im sure someone like wozzah can provide some if he has time.

Although the peak HP might only be a 3% improvement because the stock cat, exhaust and intake system effectively chokes the high rpm breathing, the midrange, which isn't flowing hard enough to reach the other components choke point, will improve greatly.
The area under the curve, that is the AVERAGE HP ACROSS THE USEABLE POWERBAND improves closer to 8 or 10%, so the car is in fact a fair bit quicker.

If you can get an extra 30hp at the wheels out of a Type R VTEC honda engine you can get something out of a 70's era mazda design.

Pull any stock extractor out and most times, you'll see crushed piping. My DC2 Integra Type R is no exception.

The replacement headers are clearly better flowing, but that in concert with the exhaust system and intake yielded a gain from 109kW at the wheels, to 121kW. A Hondata ECU squeezed another 6kW out, and the car pulled 127kW.

There was a flat spot attributed to the oversized intake, but that will be sorted when I go for a slightly larger TB and replacement manifold. This probably won't give me much more at the top, but will sort out the dip in the curve...not a priority though.

And to answer OP's original question, I have the XForce ones on my NB (in fact, complete system). I haven't dynoed the car, but the gains were reasonably obvious.

Totally agree,but the tests we have done on standard Nb's show more gain from the exhaust being freeflow with a new cat. than headers,ie. a car with standard headers and a freeflow exhaust and cat. is only 1-2 RWKW down than one with the exhaust and headers.I know each car varies and dyno days vary but this has happened more than once on before and after tests on the same dyno on the same day so it MAY be so.

The torque curves and power curves have also been consistently better all over so it hasn't been a case of peak (or probably more correctly peaky power).

But I agree the op will get a bit more with headers and may be surprised at the change of sound,it may well be quieter than before.

Hi Mate,

I'm going from memory here but I'm sure Hurricane is an Australian company and produce a quality product. If the extractors are priced to your liking then my sggestion would be to go ahead and buy them. The only thing that I'd be checking is to make sure the size of the piping both primary and secondary are the right size.
I'm new to Mx5's so not sure if the size offered by Hurricane is suitable. Do your homework an check out what size other manufacturers are using. Some people are using X-Force, check them out and compare.
My feeling is they may be too big for a stock motor.

Hi mate thanks for your thorts... they r only a 2" outlet... some ppl run 2 1/4 on the 1.6 mx5.. but for a non turboed mx5 2" is a good size... no pun intended :lol:
