Everything i have read about the new mazda head gasket on later NBs is that its a bandaid fix at best.
Plenty of MT.net guys suggest that a regular NB8A head gasket and a re-route is still a better option.
If it was my car i would get an accurate water temp gauge.

The gauges that are coming include water temp.
Head gasket and reroute seem the most expensive of the options at the moment. This doesn't mean they aren't the solution.

Forgot to mention that the (metal) gear ever was also getting so hot that I was considering wearing gloves.

All gears Dann. And it should have read "lever" not "ever". Even then it would have been badly worded. What I meant was that the gear knob was getting hot - so hot that either I or it will need a glove. Except it seems to me that enough heat to cause that might be too much heat for the gearbox. Before you ask, no there were no noticeable drivetrain noises, selection issues etc.

It won't help, It seems your getting enough air, I think your actual system needs a flush.

Out of interest, how can you tell if your radiator is getting 'enough' air?
I would have thought that more airflow into the IC, which I believe blocks Dave's radiator, would result in one of either a) greater heat dissipation from the IC and/or b) similar IC dissipation but cooler air reaching the radiator, due to the heat being spread through greater air mass? Obviously (b) would be better but (a) couldn't hurt.
Logic (which has failed me before, and often aerodynamics stuff seems to defy) would say that barring excessive aerodynamic drag or increased front end lift due to poor aero panels, increased rad intake area wouldn't be a bad thing? Obviously, there is a 'too' big at some point, I'm not advocating removing the entire bumper, but are there other downsides to additional airflow beside slight drag increases?

Making the intake area more that one third of the size of the radiator is pointless.
A radiator only flows 1/3 of an open rectangle its size because 2/3 of a radiators frontal area is well, radiator.
Look at things like TSE's worlds quickest BP powered mx5.
350-400whp circuit car and does enduro's and everything, its got a mouth about 2/3 the size of the stock bumper hole.
Andrew who owns it intentionally closed up the size of the hole because the car doesnt need it and he wanted the aero advantage.

This is 949's new enduro car, mind you it has <200rwhp but look at the radiator duct.
In cold weather they cover this with a mesh which has an open area of under 45%!

Presumably the air hitting the rad is turbulent (maybe another reason Dave's cooling system is struggling? poor airflow over the radiator?) but isn't having higher pressure behind that turbulent air beneficial? Again ignoring aerodynamic drag negatives. That was a lot of question marks.
