Looking for spoilers/wings suggestion

Postby tescoking » Sun Dec 09, 2012 8:31 am

Hi guys, this is my first post, I am currently have a Black GT Wing Aluminum Type V on my NB, however, since I installed it and I can feel the car is so heavy, also using more fuel than before, although its looks really nice (to me) and giving me a benefit of stability, I found that I should look for something else, first reason is because the car is heavier and using more fuel than before, and also as you guys all knew the boot cover on MX5 is very soft, when I was driving on freeway I could see the boot (not the spoiler/wings) shaking really badly, so I hope you guys can recommen what kind of meterial should I get for my wings and what type of wings is good looking to install on my NB and its won't shake like falling apart.

Do you want a wing that creates downforce? If so then downforce (at least from a car's point of view) will increase drag and hence you will use more fuel.

How is it mounted and how high is it? From your desription it sounds like it is in the middle of the boot. Charlie91's wing is mounted to the body (custom mounts) and mine is attached on the edge of the boot (custom mounts). Further, most people comment that the wing needs to be at least 12" above the boot to get into clean air.

thanks for your reply buddy, well, first I don't drive or race on the track, the purpose for me to install the wing is just for a better looks on my car also maybe taking the stability benefits, second is I found that the boot is too soft to install a big and heavy wing on it, I am just afraid of when I drive on the freeway it might taking too much downforce and tear the boot, and this is the man who helped to install said that to me. I am just wondering should I get a smaller one like Racing Beat Type II Wing or something else but made with carbon fiber.

A lighter wing would not help as it all depends on the force generated by the wing and how the load is spread back into the car (via the mounts and then the boot).

You could adjust the wing to less angle of attack but this would decrease the downforce at low speed. Your wing is not a 3D one and would generate more force if put into clean air at a rough guess probably twice the current height. You could look at putting some bracing on the boot to spread the forces.

The wing I have on mine is for the purpose of downforce, at the moment about 100kg at 130 kmh. So if you can sit on your boot and not damage it then your wing should be fine :)

I saw quite a lot of wings on the street, I just want to install a wing that can make my car more stand out but not effect the fuel use and weight, any suggestion?

Would you consider a larger spolier such as Garage Vary "Winding Dancer"?

Wings are a red flag on the streets.

thanks for Hjt reply, I did searched what is Garage Vary Winding Dancer on google, it seems like they are body kit and they do looks really good, but I really want to keep the original MX5 look, I just want to add on a wing so it looks more different, because sometime I found that the boot lid looks so bored, so I hope you guys can suggest some wings to me

Garage Vary front lip, Garage Vary Winding Dancer front and rear wind deflectors (from http://tetsuyagarage.com/) and a SuperMiata GTC-200 wing with 2 x 2.5" risers (http://949racing.com/Supermiata-GTC-200-wing.aspx). Note only 1 riser installed in the photo.

That's starting to look serious magpie - have you considered cutting/shortening the rear bumper like charlie91 did to reduce the "parachute effect"?

Voltex make some nice carbon fibre wings
Great quality and proven product however it comes with a hefty price tag.
A lot of my friends run them on their cars.
Looks great imo.

you need to take into account a few things.

if you are after a functional wing then there are two options.

you can either got for a 2d wing element similar to what you have or a 3d wing as pictured above in the other two posts.

a 2d wing will generally benefit from being in very clean air. this means for an mx5 that the lower most point of the lowest element needs to be above the highest point of the roof line. these can be mounted lower in an optimized situation similar to what you would see with a fastback where the air remains attached flowing over the car.

a 3d wing is designed in most cases to work below the roof line.

so in your case you have a 2d wing that is mounted in very turbulent air and this is going to cause a lot drag. you are either better off raising it above the roof line or getting a 3d wing.

however if you are just after not having a boring bootlid area i would suggest getting a duckbill bootlid.

www.autokonexion.com have them at reasonable prices.

you will get almost no function from this though it does suit some peoples tastes.

in any case you could get almost any universal wing and fit it to your car just fine.

as for bespoke mx5 options you can look at nopro, garage vary, autokonexion, autoexe, and many others. simply search and also having a look at clubroadster.net will get you some good results. but whatever you do, do not post a thread like this there. you will get a much more nasty response as they prefer that you would use the search function.

good luck.

You should ALWAYS use a forum's Search function, regardless of what site you use. Using the Search function will return many more answers than you'll get in a new thread and will answer many questions you may not have even thought about - many forum regulars will simply ignore new posts that ask questions that have already been asked a thousand times before so you wont always get the best answers in a new thread.

Try posting a new thread entitled "I want to turbocharge my NA, where do I start?" on miataturbo.net - those guys will e-rape you so badly you'll never go back. If however, you use their Search function and actually read the existing posts on turbocharging and ask specific questions, you'll find there's no better site regarding turbocharging an MX5 and that there's quite a few "bright cookies" there (plus the ubiquitous ar$ehole$ that exist in all forums).
