Interior Rust

I had to change the fuel pump on my NB. When I lifted the carpet on the rear parcel shelf to open the fuel tank ,I found that the access covers had a fair amount of rust. Rust remover and a spray with anti-rust paint sorted that out. The question i had was why did it rust there? Top down in the rain = carpet and underfelt damp = rust , even though the panels are fairly well rust proofed. I will be drying the carpet well after the next wet run.

I think you answered your question.... Wet carpet = rust. Car interiors are generally not painted to the same level as exteriors.

Leaky rain rails is another cause of wet carpet.

Probably wet carpet, but there was an NA8 in Sydney that was similarly rust effected in that area & it had spent much of its life one or two streets from the beach.

Chek your rain gutter drains, there is thread somewhere on how to clean them, Paul.

There's some felt matting under the parcel shelf carpet which can take forever to dry out if it gets wet. If you're not fussed about the sound deadening it provides, the felt mat can be removed and it'll let the carpet dry faster.

Also if you park outside regularly, park with the nose pointed downhill - it'll help with drainage of the rain rail.

It's used mainly on aircraft and motorcycles but is just as applicable to other vehicles.
