4.1 Diff and Housing into an NC

Postby Guy_Coles » Thu Dec 06, 2012 5:24 pm

Hi All,

I've just picked up a 4.1 diff (with housing) to go into my NC. Has anyone done the job before ? Any tips/tricks I should be aware of ? I have a couple of "hack" mechanics giving me a hand so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Guy

Hi Guy,

have had it one for me and it cost around $380 all up about 18 months ago.Just remember that they had to drop the subframes and exhaust but no real dramas.
don't worry it will transform the car, enjoy,

This is how we replace the diff in a NC. We use the hoist at work and a transmission jack but you can do the same thing at home on the ground with a trolley jack.

Rear of the car will need to be off the ground and securely supported on axle stands.

Drain diff oil
Remove tailshaft
Remove intermediate pipe and rear muffler as one assembly
Disconnect rear brake calipers and secure so no strain is on brake hoses
Mark all rear suspension inner adjustable pivot points with marker to allow easy realignment when refitting
Disconnect all rear arms from rear cradle at inner points
Disconnect lower rear shocks
Lever driveshafts at diff and remove
Remove complete rear hub and arms
Take weight of diff with jack
Remove PPF
Remove 2 upper diff mount bolts
Wiggle diff through rear cradle (usually at an angle about 45 degrees)
As the say in the manuals, refitting is the reverse of removal with the addition of the following points important points –
Don’t tighten upper diff mounts until the PPF frame is reconnected and securely in position
Only tighten up all rear arm suspension points when the suspension is compressed
Fill diff with oil
Dont drink until the job is finished completely

Thanks Guys ! This is starting to look like a job that's too big for me. I think Sailor has the answer so I'll book it in for next week or the week after with my regular mechanic.

Where did you get the diff and do you mind if I ask how much it was? I'm thinking of doing the conversion to mine too.

I Picked it up from a mate on this forum who went back to a 3.7 after Supercharging his car.

Danny at MX5+ has them for a good price
