My first thought was that you had run over a pig!

Good to hear it's fixed.
I replaced all the belts under my bonnet which has reduced the squealing. I suspect it's the alternator bearing (as it squeals more when the headlights are on). What a pain to fix... Wonder if I could try lubing it for a temporary solution?

You could find its still the belts because when you put your headlights on, it puts your alternator under a big load which can make the belts squeal more - my air con starting squeals the belt because the crank pulley has surface rust, and my tensioner isn't as tight as it should be.. If you want to prove its still the belts and not the alternator - spray your belts with some good quality grip spray - I have a can of CRC Belt Grip that sticks like s... to a b......... If it still makes noise, that would point to the alternator, and if you get a steel centred screw driver and rest the blade on the alternator body (with the engine running) and put your ear to the steel centred handle end bit, you will hear the loudest squeal from the bearing (compared to placing the blade on the tensioner pulley mount etc.) - if that's the problem - works like a stethoscope.. or auto places sell stethoscopey thingys.. cheers Drek

I've got some of that CRC stuff and it is just like a can of spray on glue (I don't like using it). But like you said, I will investigate further.
Thanks.
