Hi everyone,
I'll be helping our Club on various matters in 2013 and 1 of the items that requires a fair bit of planning is the organisation of Club Tech Days.
In the past, we've organised events on suspension & alignment, car care and dyno day just as a few examples but I'm now looking for your ideas and inspirations to guide me to organising better, more current and more interesting events.
Some fast facts:
- I'm looking at organising 3 to 4 Tech Days in 2013;
- I'm still working out the dates that would not clash with other Club Events but in the meantime, please assume that these Tech Days will be hosted on weekends by default. If you have ideas that would work on weeknights then I'm all ears;
- These events don't need to be in Sydney. In fact, if you've got an idea that will combine a Tech Day to the back end of a Club Run with another Chapter (i.e. Canberra, Hunter or Shire), that'll be an added bonus!;
- Events will be open to everyone but frequent flyers will definitely be encouraged to join;
- If you have a supplier in mind who might be able to implement the idea, then please put them down as well;
Layout:
This is an open discussion forum and I know how quickly threads can gain momentum. To help me keep track of ideas from comments, can everyone with an idea please follow the simple layout below?
Headline idea: (A 1-liner on what this event can be called and what it is)
Time & Date: (Weeknight / Weekend) + (Preferred month in the year)
How it might work: (Details about the event, theoretically)
Resources required: (Anything attendees need to bring or the Club needs to provide)
Possible contact: (If you have a supplier in mind, please provide their name and contact details here)
And here's a working example...
Headline idea: Suspension day @ Spinning Wheels!
Time & Date: Weekend. Maybe a weekend that is just before a major track day would attract a bigger crowd (optional);
How it might work: A set time between 8am to 1pm for back-to-back alignment service at a group discounted price. A tech briefing by their in-house experts with some Q&A time thereafter. Attendees can hang around or check out other people's cars in the meantime;
Resources required: Organised lunch, good coffee and a few chairs would be good to encourage people to hang around;
Possible contact: Call Stu at Spinning Wheels, Waterloo on 8396 7888;
AND That's it!
Thanks very much in advance everyone... and let's keep this thread rolling

skidpan - a BIG yes from me
Headline idea: MX-5 DIY Day
Time & Date: Weekend.
How it might work: Demonstrations on how to install popular modifications, car setup & maintenance from the more experienced members or professionals in the forum/club. Full day.
Resources required: Volunteers, Venue, Lunch and drinks provided.
Possible contact: A decided group of experienced members & professionals in the forum/club
I'd find something like this very informative and helpful.

Headline idea: Motorkhana Fun Day
Time & Date: Weekend.
How it might work: Friendly game of Motorkhana. There is no real need for scoring unless you really want to be competitive.
Resources required: Venue (what about Quakers hill tafe? - http://goo.gl/maps/VCaOA), Lunch and drinks provided.
Possible contact: ?

Great idea BUT due to insurance problems and/or cost the Club may not be able to consider this type of event that would probably have to be an informal event at the risk of the organisers for insurance exposure, if any.
If you can find a workshop that has the necessary insurance cover then it is worth looking at as a Club event

Let's keep the ideas going and we'll work on the barriers along the way
More ideas from people who talks but don't post :
Headline idea: Simple cosmetic surgeries for your car
Time & Date: Weeknight or Weekend.
How it might work: Demonstration and sharing of experiences on simple visual mods that we can all do to our cars such as the use of Vinyl Wrap, Plasti-dip and LEDs;
Resources required: Indoor venue, snacks and drinks provided.
Possible contact: Carbon Demon, GetDipped, Concord Customs

A great idea but the Competitions Secretary does not have the resources to run Motorkana or Skidpan days as their volunteer officials are fully committed with the Club Track Days, Super Sprints and other competition events. You cannot run these type of events without officials and insurance in the 21st Century and you could not suggest that a privateer organise such an event without experience, staff and insurance cover. S#!t happens especially in motor sport.
The Club is holding an introduction day for potential and novice track enthusiasts at MDTC on 10 March 2013 that will will go through car set up and track driving techniques in the classroom and on the track with in car training from the experienced members of the track team.
Regrettably in order to take part in a Motorkhana event you need to attend one organised by a club other than the MX-5 Club of NSW

All we need is a venue & some volunteers to run this event. No scoring system is needed. Just setup the course with witches hats and take turns one at a time. Just a fun day out. Does it really need insurance?
The popular CircuitClub does not include insurance cover

It's liability cover for the club AND the organisers of the event. Won't happen without it.
Let's not black hat all the ideas coming forward. Keep 'em coming.
Contributors should understand that just because an idea is suggested, doesn't mean the MX-5 Club of NSW will be willing/able to do it. Yes, we will try to do some things. But in other cases, we may simply make arrangements for our members to attend events organised by other clubs or third parties. We dont have to do everything ourselves.

The Marulan Driver Training Day is mainly aimed at people who want an introduction to track driving or to develop their track driving skills. It's quite tricky to teach/learn the basics of car control on a track, especially one as busy as Marulan.
Another option might be to simply book a day for our club with one of the various advanced driver training mobs. Most of them will customise the event to suit the needs of individual clubs/groups. For example:
Driving Solutions at Eastern Creek - $149 for half day, $250 for full day
Ian Luff's Drive to Survive at Eastern Creek - $285 for full day
Fifth Gear skidpan training at Sutton Road, Canberra - $150 for level 1
Bates Advanced Driving at Sutton Road, Canberra - $154 for level 1
All of these include professional driving instruction covering the basics of driver positioning, vision, braking, swerve-recover, understeer, oversteer, etc. They're done on a wet skidpan which means there is very little tyre wear, which is often a concern for people getting started with this sort of thing. Note that they are mostly run mid-week - can be difficult to book a weekend.

The insurance is for public liability cover, not for the property / cars involved.
