Confused About Motor Mounts

Postby zephyrus17 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 9:42 pm

I've been looking into replacing engine mounts (due to butterfly brace issues and might as well), but while looking at the websites, I've been really confused. The Flyinmiata website and MX5 Mania has this as the engine mount:

But the Goowin Racing website has this instead, and the price different ($50 vs $225pair):

And this write-up on the the swap has something that looks completely different.. http://www.themazdaforum.com/showthread ... Mount-Swap

I'm greatly confused, what do I get? Or are they all for different uses? I have an 1990 NA6, by the way..

the reason why there are so many variations is because mx5 motor mounts are extremely basic; some rubber with a few bolts that hold it together. Dann has even made his own motor mounts.
If you want to make it easy on yourself i suggest just getting mazdaspeed mounts / ILL motorsport mounts because they are stiffer and they dont add to NVH (i didnt notice any).

Other motors mounts are delrin but appear to be rough and add quite abit of NVH over poly mounts

the AWR mounts are severe in the vibration department, I run them.

If you want a small upgrade, get the mazdaspeed (comp) ones. Any higher and you will get a massage chair :D

The circled part is the part shown in your first photo.

Its the wear item, the other part of the photo is the bracket that physically bolts to the engine block.

The goodwin product on the left is a replacement part that replaces both the bracket and the rubber. The replacement bracket allows the redesign of the rubber section to a race poly bush type mount.

hope this helps.

Ahhhh.... just as I thought :P I only run my MX5 on the street, would running the AWR or Goodwin mount be a lot stiffer than the Mazda Comp? Or would the replacement process be easier since it's just taking out the whole thing and swapping a complete set?

Replacement process is identical.

Solid mounts make the whole car shake.

I mean like a lawnmower.

get the mazdaspeed unless racecar.

What's the advantage of solid/stiffer mounts when racecar?

Less transmission loss in power transfer from engine to gearbox, I presume

It's not about power loss, rather the forces on the gearbox are reduced due to a reduction of the twisting. High power applications break gearboxs easily

thought i would piggy pack of this topic. How long would it take to change the engine mounts?

If anyone has had any experience with the mazdaspeed diff mounts at all would be interested in feedback.
http://www.miataroadster.com/mazdaspeed ... 86175.aspx

I intend on changing both the diff and engine mounts to see if it fixes the issues I have with my car at the moment.

The mazdaspeed mounts, both engine and diff are quoted as 35% stiffer, but is there a trade off at all?

thanks

Only got the race spec engine mounts on mine with mid-spec bushes. There's more noise but not all that noticeable except with the air con running at tickover (when it ticks over at more revs than when the air con is not on).

Overall, it would be just acceptable if the car was only my DD. Since it does track days and is my DD, it's completely acceptable.

thanks - but when you say race spec mounts are these different from the mazdaspeed competition mounts or the same thing.

Think the Mazdaspeed might be rubber whereas the race ones are much stiffer polysomething.
