Suggestions, removing front splitter glue

Hey guys,

Recently took off my SE splitter, unfortunately the black glue that was holding it on is still on the front bar.



What would you use to remove it?

I having heaps of trouble getting it off, and am worried that glue removing products could eat the paint.

Given you have an mx5, did you try using <strikeout> a </strikeout> .... YOUR.. hairdryer to soften it and then try to peel / scrape it off?

There's the bug / tar remover that might work, but pfft... just get some brake fluid and be done with it ...

never use brake fluid except for brakes. Try and find out what glue it was. My usual thing is try the usual solvents - the ones that will not do any harm like turps / meths/ kero/ maybe white spirits etc. You could try lacquer thinner judiciously but do so in an inconspicuous place in case it attacks the paint. You could also try tea tree oil which will not do any harm. I tried most of these things the other day on a sticky substance and found the only thing that worked was soap and water- takes a minute to check.

it will just be double sided tape.

a hairdryer to heat it up will do the trick and just peel it off

agree it looks like d/s tape and kero will do it. No self respecting MX5er is admitting to owning a hairdryer

There's also a product called 'De-Solv-It' available from hardware stores, that is very handy to have on the shelf.. It's citrus based, and a decent soak with it can work wonders.

Methylated Spirits
Turpentine
WD40
Wax and grease remover
Caramel wheel

All paint safe, but some will leave a residue that will need to be washed off (mainly the WD, it will leave the area oily)


Personally I'd avoid the heat, it looks to me like it's more just the adhesive that's stuck and not the actual tape part, heat may just soften the glue and make it spread more rather than come off.

I'd be using Metho and patience.

in the past i've used eucalyptus oil to remove gummy residue from vehicle badging. It is cheap, smells aussie and required bugger all effort to remove seemingly permanent glue marks.


If it is *only* residue remaining and not tape material on the paint, use 3m's blue Scotch Brite scourer "no scratch" sponges. They are about $5 for a packet of two from Woolies, and work amazingly well on car paint removing 'hard to remove' bugs *without* scratching. Dunno how it works but it works. This in combination with the eucalyptus oil should help.

I've used the blue sponge on my 4wd removing bugs that i couldn't scratch off with my fingernail and hot watered truckwash detergent from metal bullbars, windscreens and bonnet paint. No scratches - just keep the sponge wet!

(also a hair dryer may likely not be enough heat to remove the goop if you go that way, a *carefully* applied heat gun will be much more effective - however it will still leave glue residue beneath the tape)

Mineral Turpentine or Eucalyptus Oil and a good hard rub repetitively in the same direction will do it, i've done it too many times to count and those are the only two solvents I've found to work.
