NA6 Power Dip

Postby CaptainNate » Sun Nov 11, 2012 4:59 am

Hi all!

Just wanting to get some ideas and thoughts thrown about with a problem of mine.

I haven't managed to find a reoccurring pattern in this situation yet, but every so often my five will have a 'power dip'. The aftermarket CD player will power down on its own accord (It powers back up within a few seconds) and my headlights will loose strength (If they are on...I believe it has happened once without them on.)

It has happened once or twice while idling at traffic lights aswell - in that case the revs will drop aswell.

Only once has the car stalled while sitting at traffic lights

I've adjusted my idle to be a tad higher to try and counter the stalling at traffic light problem, but I really don't want to be running on a higher-than-normal idle for much longer if possible.

A few of the blokes at work have suggested replacing the alternator, which I suppose I might do anyway seeing as its getting a bit aged

Another idea that came to my mind is maybe something to do with the power cables running from the CD player, when I had a look at them to connect my headrest speakers back up, the previous owner had them in a wiry, messy pile of mess. I haven't gotten around to cleaning it up and using proper wire connectors (opposed to the electrical tape on them now).

Any ideas, solutions, things for me to look at will be appreciated :)

Also check the various earthing points/ straps in the engine bay, particularly the main one at the rear of the engine.
