Crunching noise coming from gearbox

Postby D.A.M » Fri Nov 09, 2012 12:43 am

Basically when im cruising with no foot on gas or clutch this crunching noise comes from my gearbox..but then if i clutch in it completely disappears!

I asked a friend and they recommended a clutch change, but all that did was basically lower the volume of that noise.

Any ideas people???

If its a whine it could be a thrust bearing. Did you change the bearings and seals with the new clutch?

Drain the gearbox oil. Look for metal filings.
Sounds like a bearing in the box is failing

no i didn't! but thank you, I'll have a look at that?

Is it a worry though, because so far the car drives perfectly fine still.

take the car back to the repairer and ask them to test drive it with you and try and define the problem. Then take it to another trained mechanic and get another opinion. The mechanic who replaced the clutch may have merely done this because you asked him to without diagnosing the problem. What was the condition of the clutch and what about the car- how many KM's etc.
